- El reverendo Lewis Sperry Chafer (n. 27 de febrero de 1871 - f. 22 de febrero de 1952) nacido en un hogar cristiano en Rock Creek, Ohio, Estados Unidos, tuvo como antepasados a ministros fieles del evangelio. Su padre era pastor congregacionalista y murió cuando Chafer tenía 11 años de edad.Estudió en la New Lyme Academy (Ohio) y en el Oberlin Conservatory College (Ohio). Se dedicó mininisterio como cantante cristiano y evangelista. En 1910 fue ordenado al ministerio congregacionalista, tres años después cambió su afiliación al presbiterianismo, al ser nombrado profesor de música en la Mount Hermon School para jóvenes. En 1903 fue profesor en la Philadephia School of the Bible, recién fundada por Scofield (v.) y Pettingill (v.), donde permaneció 20 años. En 1924 fundó, junto con W.H.G. Thomas (v.) el Evangelical Theological College (hoy Dallas Theological Seminary), del que fue su primer presidente y profesor de teología sistemática hasta el día de su muerte. Su experiencia como pastor fue breve, de 1923 al 27, puesto que era reclamado como maestro bíblico en diversas partes de la nación. Viajó mucho en compañía de C.I. Scofield (v.). Chafer logró colocar su seminario en un lugar prominente en la escena religiosa norteamericana. De 1934 a 1952 editó la revista teológica Bibliotheca Sacra, en el 47 completó su mundialmente famosa Teología Sistemática en 8 volúmenes. Premilenial y dispensacionalista destacado, se pronunció extensamente a su favor en su Teología Sistemática. Esto hizo que muchas de sus conclusiones se vieran algo distorsionadas, por lo que su teología se ha visto relegada, pese a sus secciones provechosas y provocativas. Aunque su recurso principal es la Biblia misma, no deja de tener sus páginas repletas de referencias a otros teólogos. Escrita con sencillez y claridad y bien estructurada. Calvinista sublasariano, moderado, en el sentido de explicar el plan o esquema de la elección mediante la presciencia infinita de Dios. El eje central de su teología fue la infinita gracia de Dios. “Sin lugar a dudas, su enseñanza y su ministerio escrito y hablado ejerció una incalculable influencia en la comprensión bíblica de la Iglesia en el siglo XX” (C.C. John Hannah described Chafer as a visionary Bible teacher, a minister of the gospel, a man of prayer with strong piety. One of his students, Charles Caldwell Ryrie, who went on to become a world renowned theologian and scholar, stated that Chafer was an evangelist who was also "an eminent theologian." (en)
