- I'm a Rainbow is the ninth studio album recorded by Donna Summer. The album was recorded in 1981 and scheduled to be released on October 5 but was shelved. It would not be released until fifteen years later on August 20, 1996. There was no official release or promotion for the album. There are also no singles and no music videos from the album. AllMusic gave the album a positive review. In 2021, Summer's estate released a reedited version of the album, subtitled Recovered & Recoloured. The new edition is reduced to 10 tracks (15 on vinyl and streaming releases), with each song remixed by contemporary producers and remixers. (en)

Después de convertirse en una de las artistas más vendidas e importantes de la era disco en la década de los 70, Summer firmó con Geffen Records en 1980 y lanzó el álbum de new wave The Wanderer y I'm a Rainbow, un álbum doble orientado a la música dance, el cual sería lanzado a continuación (Summer había ganado mucho éxito gracias a sus álbumes dobles durante los 70). Płyta była nagrywana w 1981 roku we współpracy z Giorgiem Moroderem, i Haroldem Faltermeyerem i planowo miała być wydana jesienią tego samego roku jako kolejny album dwupłytowy. David Geffen, szef wytwórni Geffen, z którą Summer była związana w tamtym czasie, nie był jednak przekonany co do kierunku nowych nagrań i wstrzymał wydanie albumu. Ostatecznie materiał został oficjalnie wydany dopiero w 1996 roku nakładem wytwórni Mercury. W międzyczasie kilka utworów z płyty pojawiło się na różnych wydawnictwach: „Highway Runner” i „Romeo” zostały wykorzystane na ścieżkach dźwiękowych do filmów Beztroskie lata w Ridgemont High i Flashdance odpowiednio w 1982 i 1983 roku, natomiast „I’m a Rainbow” i „Don’t Cry for Me Argentina” trafiły na kompilację The Donna Summer Anthology w 1993.
