The Gola language is an isolate within the Niger–Congo language family. As of 2015, it is spoken by about 278,000 people. The name Gola is a possible source for the name of the Gullah, a people of African origin living on the islands and coastal regions of Georgia and South Carolina, in the southeastern United States. Estudios más recientes no aceptan la inclusión al grupo Mel por falta de elementos que permitan relacionarlo. Para esta corriente el Gola forma una rama propia dentro de la familia Níger-Congo. En la actualidad rondan los 200.000 hablantes. Proceden de Costa de Marfil, desde donde llagaron en varias oleadas. Una vez en Liberia fueron expulsados hacia el norte por los . No hay acuerdo sobre el momento histórico en que se dio esta emigración. Hay investigaciones que la ubican en el siglo XII, otras a finales del siglo XIII, principios el XIV y finalmente las que aseguran que ocurrió en época más tardía, en el correr del siglo XV. En la tradición liberiana, se afirma que Jina y Dua eran las etnias nativas de su territorio y que los Gola, junto con los Kissi y los pueblos llegaron en una primeras oleadas migratorias en una época prehistórica. Mantuvieron una actitud hostil hacia los colonos américo-liberianos durante el siglo XIX y principios del XX. Se organizan en clanes territoriales. Son agricultores y su principal producto es el arroz de montaña. Participan de las sociedades secretas poro y sande. (es)
