- Das Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) (deutsche Bezeichnung: Globales Forum für Migration und Entwicklung) ist eine von den Mitgliedstaaten der Vereinten Nationen initiierte Initiative, um die Zusammenhänge zwischen Migration und Entwicklung auf praktische und handlungsorientierte Weise anzugehen. Es ist ein informeller, unverbindlicher, freiwilliger und staatlich geführter Prozess, der den Höhepunkt von mehr als einem Jahrzehnt des internationalen Dialogs über die wachsende Bedeutung der Verbindungen zwischen Migration und Entwicklung darstellt. Es spiegelt die schrittweise Anerkennung der Grenzen eines streng nationalen Ansatzes für Migrationsfragen und deren Auswirkungen auf globaler Ebene in einem zwischenstaatlichen Rahmen wider. Das Globales Forum für Migration und Entwicklung arbeitete in mehreren Sitzungen den Konsens für den Globalen Pakt für eine sichere, geordnete und reguläre Migration aus. (de)

It provides a flexible, multi-stakeholder space where governments can discuss the multi-dimensional aspects, opportunities and challenges related to migration, development, and the link between these two areas. The GFMD process allows governments - in partnership with civil society, the private sector, the UN system, and other relevant stakeholders – to analyze and discuss sensitive issues, create consensus, pose innovative solutions, and share policy and practices. - El Foro Mundial sobre Migración y Desarrollo es una iniciativa de los Estados para discutir los aspectos multidimensionales de la migración y el desarrollo. El Foro Mundial surgió en el marco del Diálogo de Alto Nivel sobre Migración Internacional y Desarrollo celebrado en el seno de la Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas en 2006. A la fecha, el Foro Mundial ha tenido cinco reuniones: Bruselas 2007, Manila 2008, Atenas 2009, Puerto Vallarta 2010, Ginebra 2011, Port Louis, Mauricio en 2012. La séptima reunión tendrá lugar en Estocolmo, Suecia en mayo de 2014. El Foro Mundial es un proceso independiente de las Naciones Unidas, aunque mantiene vínculos con el Secretario General a través de su Representante Especial para la Migración Internacional, Peter Sutherland. Además, se ha desarrollado un importante vínculo con el Grupo Mundial de Migración, el cual agrupa a las agencias, programas y organizaciones vinculadas con el tema migratorio: ACNUR, Banco Mundial, OACDH, OIM, OIT, ONUDD, PNUD, UNCTAD, UNDESA, UNESCO, UNFPA, UNICEF y UNITAR La creación del Foro fue propuesta por el Secretaría General de Naciones Unidas en 2006, tras la presentación del Informe de la , en el marco del de 2006, realizado durante los trabajos de la Asamblea General de Naciones Unidas.
