- فريدريك ترافس دبناه الحاصل على رتبة الإمبراطورية البريطانية (29 أبريل عام 1938 - 6 نوفمبر عام 2004) هو عامل مداخن وشخصية تلفزيونية إنكليزية. كان مهتمًا بالهندسة الميكانيكية للغاية ووصف نفسه بـ«ميكانيكي الشوارع الخلفية». اعتمدت بريطانيا بشدة على الفحم الحجري لتغذية صناعاتها في الوقت الذي ولد فيه دبناه. كان مفتونًا بالمحركات البخارية التي كانت تشغل العديد من مصانع النسيج في بلدة بولتون خلال طفولته، ولكنه أولى اهتمامًا خاصًا بالمداخن والرجال الذين عملوا عليها. بدأ دبناه حياته المهنية كنجار قبل أن يصبح عامل مداخن. خدم عامين في فيلق خدمات الطعام التابع للجيش البريطاني حين كان في الثانية والعشرين من العمر ليستوفي بذلك خدمته العسكرية. عاد إلى مزاولة مهنته كعامل مداخن بعيد تسريحه ولكنه لاقى نجاحًا محدودًا حتى طُلب منه إصلاح كنيسة أبرشية بلدة بولتون. عملت الدعاية الناتجة عن ذلك على تحسين صورة عمله وهو ما ضمن له عدم انقطاع عمله على الإطلاق. صور طاقم إخباري محلي تابع للبي بي سي دبناه وهو يقوم ببعض الإصلاحات في قاعة بلدية بولتون في عام 1978. أعلنت البي بي سي بعدها عن إعداد فيلم وثائقي يتتبع حياة دبناه المحفوفة بالمخاطر خلال عمله على المداخن وتفاعله مع عائلته وتحدثه عن هوايته المفضلة ألا وهي طاقة البخار. لاقى أسلوبه اللانكشري ونظرته الفلسفية العصامية اللطيفة استحسان المشاهدين وظهر بعدها في عدد من البرامج التلفزيونية. انعكس تدهور القطاع الصناعي البريطاني على دبناه من خلال التراجع الذي شهده عمله كعامل مداخن خلال أواخر عمره، ولذلك أصبح يعتمد بصورة متزايدة على اللقاءات الإعلامية وإلقاء الخطب في حفلات العشاء حتى يعزز دخله. قدم دبناه برنامجًا عن تاريخ بريطانيا الصناعي في عام 1998. وقدم بعدها عددَا من البرامج التي تناولت بمعظمها الثورة الصناعية وما تركته من إرثٍ ميكانيكي ومعماري. توفي جراء إصابته بسرطان المثانة في شهر نوفمبر عام 2004 عن عمر يناهز 66 عامًا. - Frederick Travis Dibnah, MBE (29 April 1938 – 6 November 2004) was an English steeplejack and television personality, with a keen interest in mechanical engineering, who described himself as a "backstreet mechanic". When Dibnah was born, Britain relied heavily upon coal to fuel its industry. As a child, he was fascinated by the steam engines which powered the many textile mills in Bolton, but he paid particular attention to chimneys and the men who worked on them. He began his working life as a joiner, before becoming a steeplejack. From age 22, he served for two years in the Army Catering Corps of the British Army, undertaking his National Service. Once demobilised, he returned to steeplejacking but met with limited success until he was asked to repair Bolton's parish church. The resulting publicity provided a boost to his business, ensuring he was almost never out of work. In 1978, while making repairs to Bolton Town Hall, Dibnah was filmed by a regional BBC news crew. The BBC then commissioned a documentary, which followed the rough-hewn steeplejack as he worked on chimneys, interacted with his family and talked about his favourite hobby—steam. His Lanky manner and gentle, self-taught philosophical outlook proved popular with viewers and he featured in a number of television programmes. Towards the end of his life, the decline of Britain's industry was mirrored by a decline in his steeplejacking business and Dibnah increasingly came to rely on public appearances and after-dinner speaking to support his income. In 1998, he presented a programme on Britain's industrial history and went on to present a number of series, largely concerned with the Industrial Revolution and its mechanical and architectural legacy. He died from bladder cancer in November 2004, aged 66. (en)

- I've seen them from close-up and they're fantastic, great big stones perched two hundred feet up in the sky, covered in incredible carvings and all fitting perfectly, in an attempt to keep them up for ever. That's why I don't get much pleasure demolishing a chimney, when I think of those fellows manhandling tens of thousands of bricks and tons of mortar, to build the thing in the first place. (en)
