- Die EcoHealth Alliance ist eine in den USA ansässige Nichtregierungsorganisation, deren erklärtes Ziel der Schutz von Menschen, Tieren und der Umwelt vor neu auftretenden Infektionskrankheiten ist. Die Non-Profit-Organisation konzentriert sich auf Forschungsarbeiten zur Verhinderung von Pandemien und zur Förderung des Naturschutzes in weltweiten Hotspot-Regionen. Ihr Chef ist der Wissenschaftsmanager Peter Daszak. Die EcoHealth Alliance konzentriert sich auf Krankheiten, die durch die Abholzung von Wäldern und die zunehmende Interaktion zwischen Menschen und Wildtieren verursacht werden. Die Organisation hat das Auftreten von Krankheiten wie dem schweren akuten Atemwegssyndrom (SARS), dem Nipah-Virus, dem Nahost-Atemwegssyndrom (MERS), dem Rifttalfieber, dem Ebola-Virus und COVID-19 erforscht. Nach dem Ausbruch der COVID-19-Pandemie wurden die Beziehungen zwischen EcoHealth und dem Wuhan Institute of Virology im Zusammenhang mit Untersuchungen zum Ursprung von COVID-19 infrage gestellt. Aufgrund dieser Bedenken zogen die NIH im April 2020 die Finanzierung der Organisation zurück. Diese Entscheidung wurde heftig kritisiert, unter anderem in einem gemeinsamen Schreiben, das von 77 Nobelpreisträgern und 31 wissenschaftlichen Gesellschaften unterzeichnet wurde. Im August 2020 stellte das NIH die Mittel für die Organisation als eine von elf Institutionen, die an der Initiative Centers for Research in Emerging Infectious Diseases (CREID) beteiligt sind, wieder zur Verfügung, aber alle Aktivitäten, die durch den Zuschuss finanziert wurden, blieben ausgesetzt. Significant criticism followed this decision, including a joint letter signed by 77 Nobel laureates and 31 scientific societies. The NIH later reinstated funding to the organization as one of 11 institutions partnering in the Centers for Research in Emerging Infectious Diseases or CREID initiative in August of 2020, but all activities funded by the grant remain suspended. In 2022, the NIH terminated EcoHealth Alliance grant, stating that "EcoHealth Alliance had not been able to hand over lab notebooks and other records from its Wuhan partner that relate to controversial experiments involving modified bat viruses, despite multiple requests."
