No hi ha molts documents que parlin de la gramàtica del chaná, tan sols un llibre escrit per Dámaso Antonio Larrañaga i algunes llistes de paraules. - The Chaná language (autoglossonym: Lanték, that means "speak" or "language"; and this, from lan, "tongue" and tek, a communicative suffix) is one of the Charruan languages spoken by the Chaná people in what is now Argentina and Uruguay along the Uruguay and Paraná Rivers on the margins of the Río de la Plata. It was spoken by the Chaná from pre-Columbian times in the vast region that today is between Entre Ríos Province, Argentina and Uruguay, and the Uruguay and Paraná Guazú Rivers. According to recent oral memory narratives, in ancient times, they inhabited territories around the current Brazilian margin of the Uruguay River. They later migrated from this location along the Uruguay and Paraná Rivers from the outfall of the Iguazú River and from the Paraguay River to the current location of Asunción. UNESCO recognizes it as a living language but also as "extremely endangered" because it has only one native speaker. The Chamber of Deputies of the Entre Ríos Province recently recognized the necessity for the government to recognize and protect the language. (en)
- El chaná es una lengua charrúa que fue hablada por los chanás en regiones de lo que hoy es Argentina y Uruguay, a lo largo de los ríos Uruguay y Paraná. La documentación sobre el chaná es limitada. Existe una pequeña gramática escrita por Dámaso Antonio Larrañaga y unas cuantas listas de palabras. El chaná fue incluido por la Unesco en el Atlas de lenguas del mundo en peligro en el año 2010. A mediados de 2005, Blas Jaime, un habitante de la ciudad argentina de Paraná nacido en Nogoyá dio a conocer que conservaba por transmisión oral de su madre la lengua chaná. Se considera a Blas Jaime un semihablante del chaná. Su conocimiento de esta lengua ha sido estudiado por el lingüista argentino J. Pedro Viegas Barros, quien llevó a cabo diversos estudios de morfosintaxis, fonética y fonología. Viegas y Blas Jaime hicieron un inventario de más de 250 vocablos y frases, entre ellas todas las palabras charrúas y chanás conocidas, ayudando a elaborar un diccionario del idioma. (es)
