- The Aalter Formation (Dutch: Formatie van Aalter, abbreviation: Aa; named after the town of Aalter in East Flanders) is a geologic formation in the subsurface of northwest Belgium. The formation consists of marine clay and sand, deposited in the shallow sea that covered northern and central Belgium in the Eocene epoch. The Aalter Formation crops out in the provinces of East Flanders and West Flanders and forms a maximally 30 meters thick layer in the subsurface. To the east, the formation wedges out and becomes thinner. Due to this wedging out, the formation does not occur anymore in the province of Antwerp. The base of the formation consists of glauconiferous clayey sand alternating with organic rich (humus and peat) layers (the ). On top of this is a sequence of clay, sand and sandstone layers, rich in fossils (the ). The top of the formation consists of fossil rich, glauconiferous fine sand (the ). The Aalter Formation was formed during the late Ypresian to early Lutetian ages, giving it an age of around 48 million years. It is part of the Zenne Group and is covered by the Brussel Formation. If the Brussel Formation is absent, the Lede Formation can be found on top of the Aalter Formation. Both are like the Aalter Formation part of the Zenne Group. Stratigraphically below the Aalter Formation are deposits of the Gentbrugge Formation (late Ypresian marine clays and sands). (en)
- De Formatie van Aalter of Aalter Formatie (sic, afkorting: Aa; genoemd naar Aalter in Oost-Vlaanderen) is een geologische formatie in de ondergrond van het noordwesten van België. De formatie bestaat uit mariene kleien en zanden, die afgezet zijn in de zee die het noorden en midden van België bedekte tijdens het Eoceen. De formatie dagzoomt in de provincies Oost- en West-Vlaanderen en vormt een maximaal 30 meter dik pakket in de ondergrond. Ze wigt uit naar het oosten en is ten oosten van Antwerpen niet meer aanwezig. De basis van de formatie bestaat uit glauconietrijk kleiig zand, waarin klei-, humus- en veenlaagjes voorkomen. Daarop volgt een pakket klei-, zand- en zandsteenlagen, waarin bovenin fossielen voorkomen. De top van de formatie bestaat uit fossielrijk glauconiethoudend fijn zand. De Formatie van Aalter heeft een ouderdom van Laat-Ypresiaan tot Vroeg-Lutetiaan (ongeveer 48 miljoen jaar oud) en behoort tot de Zenne Groep. Boven op de formatie ligt de Formatie van Brussel, of als deze afwezig is de Formatie van Lede. Beide behoren ook tot de Zenne Groep. Onder de formatie liggen afzettingen van de Formatie van Gentbrugge (mariene kleien en zanden uit het Laat-Ypresiaan). (nl)
