Academic Advising

Academic advising in the AESHM department provides students with many opportunities and services, including:

  • Development of academic plans and goals
  • Career guidance
  • Referrals to other campus and community organizations

Contacting Your Advisor

Students are assigned an AESHM advisor upon officially entering the department. Advisor assignments can be found on AccessPlus.

You should contact your advisor whenever you have questions. It is also strongly recommended that you make an appointment to visit your advisor before registration period begins. You can contact your advisor by email, but many allow you to make an appointment directly in AccessPlus.

Academic Advising Relationship

Advising provides students with a personal connection to the university and to the AESHM department. Getting the most out of advising appointments requires both student and advisor to be prepared, flexible, and respectful.

The more you get to know your advisor and allow him or her to get to know you, your strengths, goals, and interests, the more satisfying and beneficial the relationship becomes. Advisors want you to be successful in your college experience and in achieving your academic and personal goals. The more they know you, the better advocate they can be for you.

Advisors expect you to become familiar with the Iowa State University Schedule of Classes. It is the responsibility of the student to know and understand the requirements for his/her degree and to maintain a plan with the advisor to ensure all requirements are completed according to the schedule desired by the student.
