Naming Customs
The family seems to reliably use FitzAlan from its earliest foundations in Shropshire, England. It appears first in the generation of William and Simon, children of Alan FitzFlaad (1070-1114), who carry it as a patronym/surname. The next generation, in the person of William (II) FitzAlan begins reliable use of "FitzAlan" as a surname.
