Making a rain gauge is a great way to teach children how rainfall is measured. Here are some simple instructions on making one at home.
First take an empty 2 Liter bottle and with adult supervision, cut the top off the bottle. Next, put some tape over the rim of the other portion of the bottle to prevent getting any cuts.
After taping the rim, roll a out some masking tape then use your sharpie to mark every half inch along the tape.
After marking the tape-stick it on the outside of the bottle. Next tape the top upside down, inside of the bottle and then you're rain to start recording rainfall. Be sure to place your rain gauge outside in the open. You may want to wedge it between to flower pots to keep it from blowing over.
