OPHELIA IN PIECES BY CLARE JACOB (Short Books, pounds 12.99)
BARRISTER Ophelia Dormandy's life is falling apart. Her husband
declares he's having an affair, and leaves. Her nine-year-old son
makes friends with a spoilt and mysterious teenager, against mum's
wishes, while on the professional front she's strangely drawn to
one client, although he's lying to her. Former barrister Clare
Jacob's debut novel is a good mixture of court-room politics and
personal angst. The plot is not beyond the realms of believability, a
rare treat in chick-lit fiction. And although the end is disappointingly
obvious, it's a good beginning for Jacob's new career.
