McGuire victorious in Beck's fish-off; GAME ANGLING.

JOHN McGuire won the Troutmasters fish-off at Lockwood Beck, weighing in four for 12lb 10oz, with a 5lb time bonus pushing this to 17lb 10z.

Lee Cartmel was second with four for 7lb (plus a 6lb time bonus), Malcolm Proudlock was third with 9lb 12oz, Gordon Rooks was fourth with one for 4lb 4oz.

Lockwood fished well this past week, with 144 anglers landing 341 rainbows to 10lb for a rod average of 2.4 with 124 kept at an average weight of 2lb 6oz.

Les Wheatley caught 10 rainbows to 3lb.

Boat anglers also enjoyed good sport, with John McGarrell landing 16 to 4lb. Stan Drummond and William Leitch had 14 to 4lb 8oz between them.

There will be a BFTA float tube demonstration at Lockwood on Saturday, May 3 and the fishery will host a heat of the Scierra Pairs on Sunday, May 18.

Tony Natrass and Peter Blythe won the first heat of the WaterAid boat pairs at Kielder water with 16 for 27lb 5oz. Joining them in the final will be Tom Nelson and Brad Mackie, reigning champions Peter Pattinson and Ray Fothergill, Stephen Fletcher and Andrew Coates, and Rob Clarke and Kevin Dinning.

Glen Appleby won Sharpley Springs' Troutmasters fish-off with 11 fish. Jim Tuck was second and James Stephenson came third, while Higham Lakes are fishing very well, with anglers enjoying good sport with dry flies. Richard Wood from Belsay had another good week, returning more than 20 fish to 8lb.

The best recorded bag at Caistron this week was 11 rainbows. The fishery's stretch of the River Coquet is in good condition but still awaiting the first salmon of the season.

There have been large hatches this past week producing excellent surface activity on all three lakes at Chatton where Jack Hills, 12, landed a 2lb 8oz rainbow - his first-ever fish on fly.

Ladykirk and Norham Anglers held a friendly competition at the fishery on Sunday. Sean Wood from Norham had the heaviest bag at 14lb 6oz and Dean Cockburn, also from Norham, won the junior competition.

Frank Gray from Stanhope had a great day at Derwent Reservoir, taking four for 14lb on the meadow.

Good numbers of double-figure fish and limit bags were recorded at South Linden this past week with G Maddison of Bedlington netting a 20-pounder.

D McKnight landed the best catch of the week at Naworth with 24 to 3lb on fly.

Two tagged fish were caught at Fontburn during the past week, with David Burnett from Corbridge collecting his PS200 prize on Monday and Geoff Milburn lifting the sweepstake on Friday.

The best fish of the week at West House was an 11lb rainbow caught and released by Simon Ruteledge of Leyburn, while at Witton Castle, P Appleby and G Appleby each had 15-fish limits.

Dry fly enthusiasts have taken full advantage of the evening rises at Knitsley Mill where Gareth Tilley won the senior Troutmaster fish-off and Ryan bell took top spot in the junior event.

Long Crag: Small Damsels, Hare's Ears, Daddies, Diawl Bach, various buzzers.

Sharpley: Olive Shuttlecock/Foam Head, Black Buzzer, GRHE nymph, Hare's Ear Emerger/Shipman's, Daddies, Sedgehog, Lake Olive Dun, Green F Fly, Black Beetle, Black and Peacock Spider, Emerging Spiders, Dry Shipman's, Black Tadpole, Dawson's Olive.

South Linden: Yellow Dancer, Black Buzzers, Black Bloodworm, Cat's Whisker.

West House: Small black beetles, F Flies, Buzzers. Witton Castle: Shipman's Buzzer, Wicked White Buzzer, CdC F Fly.

BAIT BOX Derwent: Pink PowerBait Eggs and Magic Dust. Fontburn: Ledgered Red Gulp or Pink PowerBait Eggs. Kielder: Worm and sweetcorn.
