DARLINGTON March 16 Darlington Farmers Auction Mart held its weekly sale of Cast Cattle, Store and Breeding Stock on March 16.

A tremendous show with several consignments of strong cattle led to the Steers averaging PS918 with over a third of them selling in to four figures. The top price was PS1300 paid for an outstanding 23 month old British blue from G & A Gibson & Son, High Etherley which sold to Robert Matten of Avenue Grange, Thirsk. The same vendor led the way in the Heifers also as they sold a pair of strong Limousin's for PS1125, their 4 strong cattle averaged over PS1200 on the day. The trade for Young Bulls was strong as we would expect due to the solid trade our Prime Bull men are seeing every Thursday, the sale topper a 17 month old Limousin from J Curry, High Park Farm was sold to regular supporter's J A & M Boyes, Strathmore House for PS1070. A pair of 4 and 5 month old Shorthorn Bull's from T H Mace & Sons, Hill Top Farm led the Stirk section when they sold to P Kirk, Stonehouse Cote for PS585 apeice.

CAST CATTLE A mixed show of Cows still proved to be in demand and while the trade was back on paper in real terms it would be equal to that of the past few weeks, the men continue to source feeding cattle in the green market which keeps the trade both consistent and reliable every Monday. Top price came from Owlands Farm, Hurst with a 6 year old Belgian Blue Cow bought by P R Cheesbrough, Barmpton Grange for 169ppk. Leading the Gross Value's this week was a strong British Blue from W Wearmouth & Son, Rose Hill Farm the 4 year old was bought by Cleveland Meats, Stockton for PS1287. Dairy Cows sold well on the day with a top of PS931 from R N Foord & Son, Hill Top Farm selling again to Cleveland Meats and 140ppk from W Denham, Dent Gate which was purchased by J A Jewitt Ltd, Spennymoor.

STORE AND BREEDING SHEEP The store hoggs are drying up fast however those which are left provided that they are healthy specimens remain a fantastic trade, the best on show this week from K Mitchelson, Dene House Farm who sold all 44 for over PS83. A run of in lamb ewes from G P Addison, Heyberries Farm created great interest at ringside and duly sold very well with the best pen of Mule's a credible PS158. Ewes with lambs at foot from W & C Iceton hit the PS200 mark for a pen of 5 three crop Texel Ewe's all suckling twins knocked down to W M Garbutt, Water Hall Farm.
