(sə-wĕt′ō, -wā′tō) A former district of segregated townships on the southwestern outskirts of Johannesburg, South Africa. Soweto was the scene of violent anti-apartheid rioting in 1976, when a student protest led to clashes with police. In 2000, the district was officially incorporated into Johannesburg.
