The walrus (
Odobenus rosmarus) grows to 3 meters in length and live up to 40 years.
Fifty of 58 walruses (
Odobenus rosmarus rosmarus) instrumented with satellite-linked transmitters in four areas in eastern Smith Sound, Northwest Greenland, during May and June of 2010-13 and 2015 provided data for this study.
Oral stereotypies occur across many mammal species including giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis tippelskirchi, Fernandez et al., 2008), cows (Bos taiirus, Redbo, 1998), bears (Helarctos malayanus, Tan et al., 2013), walruses (
Odobenus rosmarus, Bergeron et al., 2006), primates (e.g., Macacasilenus, Mallapur et al., 2005), and horses (Fureix et al., 2011), and can result in serious oral injuries (Mason et al., 2007; Mason, 2010).
In addition to the focal species (bowhead whales) observed species included gray whales, one humpback whale, beluga whales, ringed seals, Phoca hispida; bearded seals, Erignathus barbatus; walrus,
Odobenus rosmarus; and polar bears, Ursus maritimus.
This technique has proven effective in characterizing the benthic food web (Kelly and Scheibling, 2012), and has been used to determine the impact of parental diet on egg lipid content and FAS in black-lip pearl oysters Pinctada margaritifera (Ehteshami et al., 2011), identify trophic pathways in bearded seals Erignathus barbatus and Pacific walruses
Odobenus rosmarus (Budge et al., 2007), and examine patterns in the milk of Antarctic fur seals Arctocephalus gazelle (Brown et al., 1999).

Haul-out behavior in other marine mammals such as Seals, Sea Lions and Walruses (
Odobenus rosmarus) has been related to several proximal factors such as tide (Schneider and Payne 1983; Hayward and others 2006; Patterson and Acevedo-Gutierrez 2008), time of day (Beentjes 2006), wave intensity (Kovacs and others 1990), disturbance (Salter 1979; Lelli and Harris 2001), and wind chill (Andrews-Goff and others 2010).
* The walruses scientific name, '
Odobenus rosmarus', is Latin for 'tooth-walking sea-horse'
As a result, the carcasses of walrus
Odobenus rosmarus divergens, beluga Delphinapterus leucas, harbor seal, spotted seal Phoca largha, sea otter and other marine animals regularly occur along the coastline.
The walrus (
Odobenus rosmarus) feeds primarily on mollusks in bottom sediments at depths up to 260 feet.
