The group Metatheria (Didelphimorphia) has relevance among mammals, particularly related to reproduction aspects, as they represent an important transition link between Prototheria and Eutheria groups.

However the flying squirrel is a placental mammal (infraclass eutheria) and the Petaurus breviceps is a pouched mammal (infraclass marsupialia).
However, current views give considerable support for recognizing three separate groups of living mammals, the basal lineage represents the Monotremata in Prototheria, and the derived sister groups are the marsupials in Metatheria and the placentals in Eutheria. Therefore, monotremes and marsupials are obviously not united in a single phylogenetic lineage but both taxa are also connected by their distribution pattern, testifying their Gondwanaland roots.
The formation of placenta has bestowed a special status to the animals to develop a separate class known as eutheria. Human placenta is an intrauterine fusion of embryonic or fetal and maternal tissues for the purpose of physiological transfer of nutrients and oxygen from mother to embryo and waste products of the metabolism from embryo to mother for continuation of fetal life.
