STATISTICS Class 10

This document discusses various measures of central tendency used in statistics including the mean, median, and mode. It defines each measure and provides examples. The mean is the average value calculated by summing all data points and dividing by the total number. The median is the middle number in a sorted list. The mode is the value that appears most frequently. Other topics covered include data visualization types, what statistics is, and the relationship between the mean, median, and mode.

WHAT IS STATISTICS?

 Statistics is the form of mathematical discipline that concerns the collection, organization, analysis, interpretation
and presentation of data.

WHAT IS CENTRAL TENDENCY?

DEFINITION •In statistics, a central tendency (or measure of central tendency) is a central or typical value for a probability distribution.

WHAT IS CENTRAL TENDENCY?

•Occasionally authors use central tendency to denote "the tendency of quantitative data to cluster around some central value."

OTHERS NAMES •It may also be called a center or location of the distribution.

•Colloquially, measures of central tendency are often called averages.

COMMMON MEASURES •The most common measures of central tendency are the arithmetic mean, the median, the mode and the range.

MEAN

ARITHMETIC •In mathematics and statistics, the arithmetic mean , or simply the

mean or average when the context is clear, is the sum of a collection of

MEAN numbers divided by the count of numbers in the collection.

• The arithmetic mean x̅ of a collection

DEFINITION of n numbers (from x1 through xn) is given by

MODE

The mode of a set of data values is
the value that appears most often.

For the normal distribution, the mode is also
the same value as the mean and median.
In many cases, the modal value will differ from
the average value in the data.

We can see beside that the most common form

of transport, in this particular data set, is the bus.

RELATION BETWEEN MEAN, MEDIAN, AND MODE

 There is an inter-relation between the measures of central tendency. Professor Karl Pearson has suggested an
empirical relationship between Mean, Median, and Mode. Via this equation, if the values of two measures are
known we can find the third measure. The equation is as follows
 Mean – Mode = 3 [ Mean – Median ]

CONCLUSION

 · A measure of central tendency is a measure that tells us where the middle of a bunch of data
lies.
  The three most common measures of central tendency are the mean, the median, and the
mode.
