Proteins: Types and Functions

This document discusses the types and functions of proteins. It notes that proteins are abundant organic molecules that serve structural, regulatory, transport, and other roles in living systems. Each cell contains thousands of unique proteins. Proteins come in different shapes and sizes, and their shape can change due to temperature, pH, or chemicals, affecting their function. There are several types of proteins, including enzymes, hormones, and structural proteins. Enzymes act as catalysts in biochemical reactions and increase reaction rates, while hormones are signaling molecules that control processes like growth, development, and reproduction.

PROTEINS

TYPES AND FUNCTIONS

PROTEINS
 One of the most abundant organic
molecules in living systems.
 It may be structural, regulatory,
contraticle or protective; they may
serve in transport, storage, or
membranes; toxins or enzymes
 Each cell in living system may
contain thousands of proteins,
each with a unique function.
PROTEINS
 It has different shapes and
molecular weighs: some are
globular in shape whereas others
are fibrous in nature.
 Changes in temperature, pH, and
exposure to chemicals may lead
to changes in the shape of
protein, leading to loss of
function, known as
DENATURATION.

ENZYM
ES
ENZYMES
Produced by living cells, are catalysts in
biochemical reactions and are usually
complex or conjugated proteins.

Each enzyme is specific for the

substrate it acts on.

It will help in breakdown, rearrangement,

or synthesis reactions.
ENZYMES
It should be noted that all enzymes
increase the rate of reaction and,
therefore, are considered to be organic
catalysts.

Example: salivary amylase, which

hydrolyzes its substrate amylose, a
component of starch.

substrates. substances.
HORMONES
Chemical-signaling molecules,
usually small proteins or steriods,
secreted by endocrine cells that act to
control or regulate specific
physiological processes;

• growth

• development

• metabolism

• reproduction
