Holistic Approach

This document discusses holism and the holistic approach to patient care. It defines holism as the idea that the properties of a system cannot be fully determined by its parts alone, and that the system as a whole influences how the parts behave. The holistic approach considers the physical, emotional, social, economic, and spiritual needs of the whole person, as well as their response to illness. This includes biopsychosocial factors like family, environment, and culture that impact health. The document contrasts disease-centered diagnosis and management with patient-centered diagnosis and management, which takes into account psychosocial factors about the person and lifestyle recommendations.

HOLISM
from holos, a Greek word meaning all, entire, total

Never forget that it is not a pneumonia, but a pneumonic man who is your patient. sir William Gull (1816-90)

DEFINITION
Holistic approach is a system of comprehensive or total patient care that considers the physical, emotional, social, economic, and spiritual needs of the person; his or her response to illness; and the effect of the illness on the ability to meet self-care needs.

If all these factors are taken into account when a person is treated for cancer, it make treatment easier and improve chances of success.

The management of the whole person, or the holistic approach, is an important approach to patient care and modern medicine. Whole person diagnosis is based on two components: the disease-centred diagnosis. the patient-centred diagnosis.

The disease-centred diagnosis, which is typical of hospital-based medicine, is defined in terms of pathology and does not focus significantly on the feelings of the person suffering from the disease.

psychological support appropriate reassurance patient education empowering self-responsibility anticipatory guidance/special hazard prevention health promotion lifestyle recommendation/modifications Diet/nutrition exercise alcohol smoking stress management family and social supports self-help groups alternative options consultation and referral follow-up
