BIRTH OF CHRIST
BIRTH OF CHRIST
Matthew 1:18-25 details the angelic visitation to Joseph, informing him of Mary's miraculous conception
by the Holy Spirit and instructing him to name the child Jesus, emphasizing the fulfillment of prophecy.
In Luke 1:26-38, the angel Gabriel appears to Mary, announcing her role in bearing the Son of God. Mary's
willingness and humble acceptance of her divine calling, expressed in her Magnificat
Luke 2:8-20, symbolize the announcement of Christ's birth to the common people, emphasizing God's
inclusivity. Matthew 2:1-12 introduces the visit of the Magi, emphasizing the universality of Christ's
significance. Their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh symbolize Jesus' kingship, divinity, and sacrificial
death, respectively.
The story of Joseph and Mary provides several lessons on following God's will:
• Trust and Obedience: Both Joseph and Mary exemplified trust and obedience in following God's
will. Despite the challenges and uncertainties they faced, they remained faithful to God's plan.
• Faith in Difficult Circumstances: Their journey was filled with difficulties, including the societal
stigma surrounding Mary's pregnancy and the arduous trip to Bethlehem. Yet, they maintained
their faith and trust in God's guidance.
• Sacrifice and Submission: Both Joseph and Mary demonstrated sacrifice and submission to
God's plan. Joseph chose to marry Mary despite societal pressures, and they accepted the
challenges that came with fulfilling God's purpose.
• Humility and Acceptance: They showed humility in accepting their roles in the divine plan,
understanding that they were part of something much bigger than themselves.
• Adaptability and Resilience: Joseph and Mary displayed adaptability and resilience, navigating
unexpected circumstances, such as the journey to Bethlehem and finding shelter in a manger.
Their story teaches us the importance of surrendering to God's will, even when it diverges from our
plans or societal expectations. It emphasizes trust, faith, sacrifice, and humility as essential elements in
following the path that God sets before us. Ultimately, Joseph and Mary's example encourages us to
embrace God's will with courage and obedience, regardless of the challenges it may bringb
The Gospel of Luke doesn't provide specific details about why Mary and Joseph found no room in the inn
in Bethlehem. It simply states that there was no room for them (Luke 2:7). The lack of accommodations
could have been due to the influx of people in Bethlehem because of the census ordered by Caesar
Augustus, as mentioned earlier in Luke 2:1-5. The town may have been crowded with travelers, making it
difficult for Mary and Joseph to secure a place to stay. The narrative, with Mary giving birth to Jesus in a
stable and placing him in a manger, emphasizes the humble and unassuming circumstances surrounding
the birth of Jesus. This portrayal aligns with the overarching Christian theme of the Incarnation,
emphasizing the humility of Christ's arrival on Earth.
The first Christmas was simple, it’s okay if yours is too.
1) I believe there was no room in the inn so that even from the beginning of his life,
Jesus could completely identify with the underprivileged, vulnerable, oppressed,
rejects, outcasts and poor. When God became one of us, he demanded none of the
world’s comforts, luxuries or protections. God knew that throughout history, there
would be homeless people from every part of the world, trying to stay warm at night,
who would look up at the stars and say in their heart, “God, you have no idea what I’m
going through!” To this, Jesus could honestly say, “Actually, I know exactly what you’re
going through.” 2 Corinthians 8:9 says this: “Though he was very rich, yet for your
sakes. He became poor, so that by his poverty he could make you rich.”
2) I believe there was no room in the inn so that we would be reminded that when we
chose to follow God's will it does not mean that we are taking on a comfortable or
easy life. In Matthew 16:24, Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my
disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.”
3) The fact there was no room at the inn was the beginning of the fulfillment of the
prophecy found in Isaiah 53, which says that the Messiah would be “despised and
rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering.”
