CAIS English and Reading Month Celebration

Bench Cheering Competition

Theme: “Celebrating Literacy and Language through Unity and Enthusiasm”

Competition Mechanics:
1. Eligibility and Team Composition:
 Participants: Open to all students from Grades 7 to 12 forming one team.
 Team Size: Each team must consist of a minimum of 35 members. All members must belong to the same
grade level (one section or mixed-section), ensuring fair representation across grade levels.
2. Performance Duration:
 Each cheering routine must last between 3 to 5 minutes. Teams exceeding or falling short of this time limit
will incur penalties (detailed in the restrictions).
3. Required Elements:
 Opening Chant with a theme related to the importance of literacy, reading, or the English language.
 Cheering Routine that includes hands and body movements, formations, and chants to showcase unity and
creativity.
 Reading and Language Segment where participants incorporate English words or phrases related to reading,
literacy, or famous book quotes.
 Final Chant that unifies the team and conveys the spirit of the English and Reading Month Celebration.
4. Props and Costumes:
 Props: Teams may use simple props like pom-poms, signs, or banners relevant to the theme. Large or overly
complex props that could obstruct the performance space or take excessive time to set up are not allowed.
Props must be simple and related to the theme of the celebration, promoting the spirit of literacy and
reading.
 Uniforms: All participants must wear their standard P.E. school uniforms to maintain simplicity and focus on
the theme rather than costumes.
5. Music and Sound Effects:
 Teams may incorporate background music by only using drum sets.
6. Safety Considerations:
 Safety is a priority.
 Acrobatics, stunts, or formations involving lifts, pyramids, or any action that could pose a safety risk are
STRICTLY PROHIBITED.
 All movements should be safe and manageable for team members.

Guidelines:
1. Team Size Requirement: Number of Members: Each team must consist of minimum of 35 members. All
members must be from the same grade level, could be one section or mixed-section teams.
2. Time Limit: Each team must adhere to the 3–5-minute limit. A penalty of 5 points will be deducted for every 10
seconds over the time limit.
3. Respect and Sportsmanship: Teams must display good sportsmanship and respect other participants. Disruptive
or inappropriate chants, gestures, or words are strictly prohibited and will result in immediate disqualification.
4. Audio and Prop Preparation: Teams must ensure that their audio submissions are clear and appropriately
timed. Props must be manageable and not obstruct other teams or the performance area.
5. Rehearsal and Practice: Teams are encouraged to practice outside of regular class hours. Any use of school
facilities must be coordinated with the event organizers to avoid conflicts and maintain order.
6. Promptness: All teams must be on time for their scheduled performance slot. A 5-point deduction will apply to
any team that is late.
Restrictions
1. Time Violations: A 5-point deduction will be applied for every 10 seconds a team goes over or under the 3–5-
minute time limit.
2. Prohibited Content: All routines must avoid explicit language, themes, or gestures. Any content deemed
inappropriate will lead to disqualification.
3. Safety Violations: Acrobatics, lifts, or stunts that pose a safety risk are strictly forbidden. Any team attempting
such movements will be disqualified.
4. Prop Limitations: Large or complex props that could interfere with the performance area or present hazards are
not allowed. Props must be removed immediately following each performance.
5. Penalty for Disruptive Behavior: Any form of unsportsmanlike conduct or disruptive behavior towards other
teams, judges, or the audience will result in immediate disqualification from the competition.

Judging Criteria:
Creativity and Originality (30%)
 Unique presentation of the theme.
 Innovative use of chants, props, and formations to convey the celebration of reading and literacy.
Theme Relevance and Messaging (25%)
 Connection to the English and Reading Month theme.
 Effective inclusion of English language elements, book quotes, or reading-related phrases.
Coordination and Unity (20%)
 Synchronization of movements and chants.
 Clear sense of teamwork and collaboration.
Energy and Audience Engagement (15%)
 Enthusiasm and excitement displayed throughout the performance.
 Ability to engage and energize the audience.
Overall Impact (10%)
 General appeal and memorability of the performance.

Awards and Recognition:


Champion - Awarded to the team with the highest overall score.
1st Runner-Up - Awarded to the team with the second highest overall score.
2nd Runner-Up - Awarded to the team with the third highest overall score.

Best Bench Cheer – Awarded to the team with the highest overall score.
Most Creative Team – Recognizes the team with the most original and creative routine.
Best in Theme Integration – Awarded to the team that best integrates the theme of literacy and reading.
