JESUS CHRIST – Christology

I - Jesus asked his disciples two question?

1. Who do people say the Son of man is?
2. Who do you say I am?
Mat 16:13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his
disciples, "Who do people say the Son of Man is?"
Mat 16:14 They replied, "Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still
others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets."
Mat 16:15 But what about you? he asked. "Who do you say I am?"
Mat 16:16 Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."

Many people, religious systems and philosophers have suggested various

answers to the first question. To some Jesus is a prophet, to others a great
teacher and to still others simply a good, moral man whose exemplary life is
worthy to be imitated.
But the answer to the second question is of far greater significance. For on the
response of each individual person centers not only their:
a. Their eternal destiny.
Joh 3:36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the
Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on him."
b. But the quality, meaningfulness and fruitfulness of their life here and now.
Joh 10:10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that
they may have life and have it to the full.
Col 3:3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.
Col 3:4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with
him in glory.
Gal 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in
me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and
gave himself for me.
Thus, the central, worldwide theological issue of the ages has been, and still is,
this: "Who is Jesus Christ?" And since Jesus Christ is who the Bible says He is -
God in the flesh.
All people everywhere need to be concerned not so much about religion, but
about coming into and living in right relationship to God through the Lord Jesus
Christ.
Joh 14:6 Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes
to the Father except through me.
Therefore, there can be no more important doctrine to study than the Doctrine
of Christ. For Jesus took the form of a man (Php.2:5-11) to explain to men not
only who God is and what He is like (Jn.1:18), but also to demonstrate who man
is and what God intends man to be like. (1 Pe.2:21; 1 Co.15:45-49)

II - Key Christological Texts

While there are many important texts about Jesus Christ, the following are of
special significance and should be studied carefully.
Jn.1:1-18
Ro.5:16-20
Php.2:5-11
Col.1:15-22
Col.2:9-15
Heb.1:1-9

These texts are especially important in their teaching about who Jesus is and
what He came to do.
III – THE DEITY OF CHRIST.
1. HIS PRE-EXISTENCE
• Jesus existed before His incarnation as a man. John 1:1-2, 14, 29-30.
John 6:38; John 17:5; Phil 2:5-11

2. HIS ETERNITY.
• Not only did Jesus exist before He became a man, but He is said to be
eternal, which is a characteristic belonging only to God. Isa.9:6-7; Jn.8:58
Heb.13:8; Rev.1:4-8; Rev.22:12-13

3. HIS DIVINE NATURE.

a. Jesus is fully divine.
- Jesus and the Father are one in essence.
Jn.10:30
- Jesus was fully God and embodied all the divine nature and essence.
Php.2:6; Col.1:15; Col.2:9; Heb.1:3
- Jesus revealed the nature and character of God to man. Jn.1:14,18
Jn.14:9-11; Heb.1:2
- Jesus is mentioned as an integral part of the Trinity. Mt.28:19;
2 Co.13:14

b. Jesus exhibited divine attributes which belong only to God.

- Omnipotence -Christ calmed the storm. Lk.8:22-25
- Omniscience - Christ knew what was in man. John 2:24-25
- Omnipresence - Christ's presence and power Jn.1:48-49 Mt.8:5-13
- Immutability - Christ never changes. Heb.13:8
- Life - Christ inherently has life. Jn.5:26

c. Jesus performed acts which only God can do.

- Jesus transcended natural laws by walking on water. Mk.6:47-51
- Jesus restored sight to a man born blind. Jn.9:1-7
- Jesus forgave sins. Mt.9:1-7
- Jesus raised the dead. Lk.7:11-15
- Jesus was involved in creation and is the sustainer of all things. Jn.1:3
Col.1:16-1
4. HIS NAMES AND TITLES
The names and titles of Jesus point to His deity.
- Jesus - The Lord is salvation. Mt.1:21
- Immanuel - God is with us. Mt.1:23
- Christ - Anointed One (Messiah of God), Mt.11:1-6; Mt.16:16
- Yahweh - Jesus said he was the same as “I AM” Ex. 3:14 of the Old
Testament, Jn.8:58
- Lord - New Testament equivalent of Old Testament Adonai. 2 Pe.1:11
- God - New Testament equivalent of Old Testament Elohim, 2 Pe.1:1"
- Son of God - This title describes the eternal relationship of Jesus to the
Father and does not imply that Jesus became God's son at some point
in time (e.g. birth, baptism, resurrection, etc.). Christ has always been
in the relationship of Son to Father, Jn.3:16 – 17; Gal.4:4.
When this title was used of Jesus the Jews charged him with
blasphemy (i.e.-claiming to be God) Mt.26:62-66."
- Son of Man - This was Jesus favorite title of Himself. But it too was a
claim to be God as Mt.26:62-66 makes clear. For Jesus to be called son
of Man was to identify him as both a real man and the perfect man (last
Adam). Jesus as a man was all that Adam was not. "Son of Man" links
Jesus to the kingship prophecy in Da.7:13-14; Mt.19:28 and is also tied
to His salvation mission, Mk.10:45.
- Son of David - this title relates Jesus specifically to the right to sit on
the everlasting throne under the Davidic Covenant. 2 Sa.7:11-16,
Lk.1:26-33, Mt.21:9-11

5. HIS DESIGNATIONS.
- “One and only son” (only begotten)
This term “monogeneses" stresses Christ's uniqueness as God's only Son
for all eternity. There is no one else like Christ. Jn.1:14,18; Jn.3:16.
- “First Born” This term Gk. Word “prototokos" stresses Christ's pre-
distinction and position as God's chosen one.

It is almost like an historical title which relates to the rights which are
His by virtue of His position as God's son. It has nothing to do with time
nor to the idea that Christ was created at some point in history. It
relates to and expands the Old Testament idea of the priority rights of
inheritance of the "first-born" son of a father. Col.1:15,18; Ro.8:29;
Rev.1:5 Ps.2:6-9.
IV - FALSE BELIEF ABOUT CHRIST
A. Bilang Tao, Panginoon at Manlilikha.

at pagmasdan.

B. Small God
John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the
Word was a god. (New World Translation of Jehovah’s Witness)
C. Created By God.
Colossians 1:15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all
creation; 16 because by means of him all other things were created in the
heavens and on the earth, the things visible and the things invisible, whether
they are thrones or lordships or governments or authorities. All other things
have been created through him and for him. 17 Also, he is before all other
things, and by means of him all other things were made to exist.
JW BIBLE JW INTERLINEAR

Isa 6:1 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a throne,
high and exalted, and the train of his robe filled the temple.
Isa 6:2 Above him were seraphs, each with six wings: With two wings they
covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were
flying.
Isa 6:3 And they were calling to one another: "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD
Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory."

Joh 12:37 Even after Jesus had done all these miraculous signs in their
presence, they still would not believe in him.
Joh 12:38 This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet: "Lord, who has
believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?"
Joh 12:39 For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says
elsewhere:
Joh 12:40 He has blinded their eyes and deadened their hearts, so they can
neither see with their eyes, nor understand with their hearts, nor turn--and I
would heal them.
Joh 12:41 Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus' glory and spoke about
him.
