Polya’s Strategy

1. Understand the problem

We need to determine the square untis that can be formed in using the
unit square.

Diverse Plan
An area of a rectangle is Length x Breadth. Find the number of different
rectangles with an area 120 square units, it is enough to find the number of
ways 120 square units can be arrange into length x breadth form.

Carry Out the Plan

Length 1x Breadth 120 120
Length 2x Breadth 60 = 120
Length 3 x Breadth 40 - 120
Length 4 x Breadth 30-120
Length 5 x Breadth 24-120
Length 6 x Breadth 20-120
Length 8 x Breadth 15-120
Length 10x Breadth 12-120
There are 8 different kinds of rectangle with an area of 120 square units.

Review the Solution

Every numbers that we multiply together has the product of 120 square
units.

2. Understand the Problem

There are total of 36 students. There are three groups of the students. 22
students who only signed up for Chemistry. 18 students who only signed up
for English. Student who do both. We must find the number of student who do
both considering the total of the group adds up to 36.
Devise Out the Plan
We could list out the 36 student and then assign to each other either
Chemistry, English or both until we got the right totals.

Carry Out the Plan

Number who signed up for both
22 +18-36= 4
Number who signed up for Chemistry only
22-4=14
Number who signed up for English only
18-4=14

Review the Solution

Chemistry: 22-4=8
English: 18-4=14
36=36
Therefore, the number who signed up for the both 4.

3. Understand the Problem

There are a total of 1024 players during the online game tournament, 4
players in each game and only one (1) winner will advance to the next round.
The problem is to determine how many games must be played to determine
the winner.

Devise the Solution

We need to divide the number of players, in every player each game. We
must played to determine the winner.

Carry Out the Problem

1st round (1024/4=256)
2nd round (256/4=64)
3rd round (64/4=4)
4th round (4/4=1) the last man standing will be the winner.

Review the Solution

256+64+4+1=341
Therefore, the total number of games will be 341.

The target number 7+

- the target number 7 has 3 cages that fill with numbers 2,1 and 4.
The target number 15x
- the target number 15 has 2 cages that fill with numbers 5 and 3.

The target number 60x

- the target number 60 has 3 cages that fill with numbers 5,4 and 3.

The target number 3+

- the target number 3 has 2 cages that fill with numbers 2 and 1

The target number 9+

- the target number 9 has 3 cages that fill with numbers 5,3 and 1.

The target number 11+

- the target number 11 has 4 cages that fill with numbers 3,2,5 and 1.

The target number 5÷

- the target nunber 5 has 2 cages that fill with nunbers 5 and 1
