Introduction/Subject or Course Overview

This is an entry level course that covers principles of microbiology and their application. Through
lectures, laboratory sessions and case studies, students will explore the historical foundations of
microbiology, microbial diversity, basic morphology and physiology, factors affecting microbial
growth, media for culturing, differentiation, and selection of groups of microorganisms, control of
microorganisms, microbial metabolism and microbial genetics.

Course Objective:

To provide knowledge on the fundamentals of microbiology, microbial diversity and their

importance to the ecosystem, and practical skills and techniques required to study microorganisms
in the laboratory.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, each student should be able to

 Explain the evolution, scope and relevance of microbiology.

 Outline on the major groups of microorganisms, their distribution in nature, and their
classifications.
 Describe some basic methods used to study microorganisms, including safe handling of
microorganisms, microscopy, staining, enumeration, isolation, characterization, and
identification techniques.
 Explain the general physiology and biochemistry of microorganisms, including microbial
metabolism, nutrition and growth.
 Describe the genetic makeup of single cells, genome replication and protein expression in
bacterial cells.
 List and explain some methods or agents used to control microorganisms.

Course Delivery: 12 Lectures (2 hours each) and 7 Laboratory sessions (3 hours each)
