What this Module is About

Note to the facilitator:

Welcome to the Mathematics for Grade 10 Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM)

Module on Circles!

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by

educators both from public institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in
helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while
overcoming their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and
independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also
aims to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

Note to the Teacher:

In response to the need for today’s challenging new normal way of living due
to Pandemic, the Grade 10 Mathematics Module Quarter 2 designed to achieve the
goals set by the Department of Education. It is expected that with the use of the
modern technologies that we have, millennial teachers are expected to be more
innovative, creative, resilient and with good communication skills.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them
to manage their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and
assist the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.

Note to Learner and Parents:

the circle.
Intercepted arc is an arc that lies in the interior of an inscribed or central angle of the circle
and has endpoints on the sides of the angle.
Sector of a circle is the region bounded by an arc of the circle and the two radii to the
endpoints of the arc.

Teacher
Let the learners use the previous modules on circle for their
reference.

What’s New

Let’s do this together!

1. The central angle of a circle measures 45°. What is the measure of its intercepted
arc?

Answer: 45° - the degree

measure of the central angle is
equal to its intercepted arc.

2. What is the measure of the inscribed angle in a circle if the measure of its
intercepted arc is 80°?
Answer: 40° - if an angle is inscribed in
a circle, then the measure of the angle
equals one-half the measure of its
intercepted arc.
Solution:

Inscribed angle=

= 40°

3. Given the figure at the right. Find the area of the segment of a circle if the
measure of arc LW = 90° and radius OW is 10cm.
Step 1 – determine the ratio
Solutions:
Ratio =

Step 2- find the Area of the circle using the formula A= r2,
where r is the radius length and = 3.14.
Answer: 28.5cm is the
A= r2
area of the segment of
= (3.14)(10cm)2 circle O.

= (3.14)(100cm2)
= 314cm2

9
Step 3– solve for the area of the sector of a circle by
multiplying the ratio in step 1 and the area of the circle in step
2.
Area of the sector of a circle = ratio x area of the circle

= x 314cm2

=78.5cm2
Step 4- solve for the Area of triangle LOW using the formula
A= , where b stands for the base and h is the height of the
triangle LOW.

A= 2

= 50cm2
Step 5- solve for the area of the segment of a circle by simply
subtract the area of the triangle in step 4 from the area of the
sector of the circle in step 3.
Area of the segment = Area of the sector – Area of the
triangle
= 78.5cm2 - 50cm2
= 28.5cm2

What’s In

Remember Me?

Tangent line is a line that intersects the circle at exactly one point called the point of
tangency.
Secant line is a line that intersects a circle at exactly two points and contains a chord of a
circle.
Theorems on Angles Formed by Tangents and Secants
A. If two secants, a tangent and a secant or two tangents intersect in the exterior of a
circle, then the measure of the angle formed is one-half the positive difference of the
measures of the intercepted arcs.
B. If two secants intersect in the interior of the circle, then the measure of an angle
formed is one-half the sum of the measures of the arcs intercepted by the angle and its
vertical angle.
C. If a secant and a tangent intersect at the point of tangency, then the measure of
each angle formed is one-half the measure of its intercepted arc.
External Secant Segment- is the part of a secant segment that is outside a circle.
*If two chords of a circle intersect, then the product of the measures of the segments of one
chord is equal to the product of the measures of the segments of the other chord.
*If two secant segments are drawn to a circle from an exterior point, then the product of the
lengths of one secant segment and its external secant segment is equal to the product of the
lengths of the other secant segment and its external secant segment.
*If a tangent segment and a secant segment are drawn to a circle from an exterior point,
then the square of the length of the tangent segment is equal to the product of the lengths of
the secant segment and its external secant segment

Note to the Teacher

What’s New

Let’s Do This Together!

1. Solve for x in the figure 1.

Note: If two secants, a tangent and a secant or two

tangents intersect in the exterior of a circle, then the
measure of the angle formed is one-half the positive
difference of the measures of the intercepted arcs.

Solution: angle x =

= 30°

2. What is the measure of angle ADB in figure 2?

Note: If two secants, a tangent and a secant

or two tangents intersect in the exterior of a
circle, then the measure of the angle
formed is one-half the positive difference of
the measures of the intercepted arcs.

Solution: angle ADB =

= 35°

23
3. Given circle O, what is the measure of angle ADC?
Note: If two secants, a tangent and a
secant or two tangents intersect in the
exterior of a circle, then the measure of
the angle formed is one-half the positive
difference of the measures of the
intercepted arcs.

Solution: angle ADC =

= 20°

4. Line AB and line CD intersect in the interior of a circle. Find the value of x in the
figure.
Note: If two secants intersect in the
interior of the circle, then the measure of
an angle formed is one-half the sum of the
measures of the arcs intercepted by the
angle and its vertical angle.

Solution: angle x =

= 50°
5. What is the measure of angle ABC, if the measure of arc AB is 130°?

Note: If a secant and a tangent intersect at the point

of tangency, then the measure of each angle formed
is one-half the measure of its intercepted arc.

Solution: angle ABC =

= 65°

24
6. In the figure below, what is value of x?
Note: If two chords of a circle intersect, then the
product of the measures of the segments of one
chord is equal to the product of the measures of
the segments of the other chord.

Solution: SL*LA = DL*LN

12*x = 9*4
12x = 36
x=9

7. What is the length of segment BA if segment CB=3, CD=4, and DE=5?

Note: If two secant segments are drawn to a circle from an exterior
point, then the product of the lengths of one secant segment and its
external secant segment is equal to the product of the lengths of the
other secant segment and its external secant segment.

Solution: CB(CB + BA) = CD(CD +

DE)
3(3 + BA) = 4(4 + 5)
9 + 3BA = 4(9)
9 +3BA = 36
3BA= 36-9
3BA= 27
BA= 9

8. What is the length of segment CD in the figure?

Note : If a tangent segment and a secant segment are drawn to a circle
from an exterior point, then the square of the length of the tangent
segment is equal to the product of the lengths of the secant segment
and its external secant segment.

Solution: (CD)2 = CB(CB + BA)

X2 = 4(4 +5)
X2 = 4(9)

X2= 36

X= 6
