IS 4984: 1995 (Reaffirmed 2002) Edition 5.5 (2006-08) ORT A Uri ott orgie & fre sea cara are wiferaPreta usa — faerie (ailen qtr ) Indian Standard HIGH DENSITY POLYETHYLENE PIPES @ FOR WATER SUPPLY — SPECIFICATION (Fourth Revision ) (lacorporating Amendment Nos, 1, 2,8, 4&5) UDC 521.643--678.743.2;628.1 ie A, @ [ahem gy} tie ® BIS 2007 BUREAU OF INDIAN STANDARDS MANAK BHAYAN, 9 BAHADUR SHAH ZAFAR MARG. NEW DELHI 110002 Prics Group 7Plastic Pipes and Pittingo Sectional Committee, CED 50 FOREWORD ‘This Indian Standard (Fourth Revision) was adopied by the Bureau of Indian Standards, after the drat finalized by the Plastic Pipes and Fittings Sectional Committee had been approved by the Civil Engineering Division Council, ‘This standard was first published in 1968 and revised in 1972, 1977 and 1987, In this fourth revision the fallawing major changes have been affected: 1) The scope of this standard now covers HDPE pipes for water supply only. Pipes for sewerage and industrial effluents are being covered in a separate ‘standard, i) The HDPE resin of designation PEEWa — 45-T-006 and PEEWA 45-T-012 (cubject toMFR aot oxcceding 1-1 g/10 minutes), conforming to [S 7328 : 1992 ‘High density polyethylene fhaterials for moulding and extrusion ( fir revision ) has been specified. 48) In addition to pipe material (HDPE) having the hydrostatic design stress as 5 MPs at 0°C fur 50 years service and the corresponding MRS (minimum required strongth) as 6.3 MPa, higher grade matenals with MES of §.0 MPa and 10.0 MPa have been introduced in Line with ISO/DIS 4497 Polyethylene (PE) pipes for water supply — Specification. issued by International Organization for Standerilization. fv) ‘Two moze classes of pipes with prosoure ratings 1.25 MPa and 1.60 MPa have been added while pressure rating of 0.2 MPa has been withirawn. ¥) Dimensionel series of pipes has boon oxtended to cover pipes of nominal diameter (DN) up to 1000 mm. vi) Additional tests such as density, MPL, ovality, cazbon black content/dispersion and over-all migration have been included as performance tests on the pipes. vii) The creep rupture tests for duration of 165 b has been modified in Tine with ISOMDIS 4427. However, the long term eresp rupture test for 1 000 h es given in ISO/DIS 4427 has shot beea included aa it was found not feasible st this stage. The short term erep rupture test at 80°C for 48 h has been retained since ISO/DIS 4427 test at 20°C for 100 h was not Tound acceptable as an acceptance test. viii) The sampling clauses for the eriteria for acceptance tests have been revised in line with 18.2500 (Par 1) : 1992 ‘Sampling inspection tables: Part 1 Inspection by attributes and by count of defects (first revision ). In the formulation of this standard a great deal of assistance has boon devived from ISO/DIS 4427. ‘The provisions relating to ovality are based on ISO/DIS 11922 Part 1) “Thermoplastic pipes for the transpor: of fluids — Dimensions and tolerances’. However, provisions regarding thermal stability toot and weathering test a6 stipulated im ISOMDIS 4427 have not been included for the time being. Regarding guidance for laying and jointing of polyethylene pipe, induding storage and handling, a feference may be made to 187634 @art 11): 1976 ‘Code of practice for plastic pipe work for potable water supplies: Part 11 Laying and jointing polyethylene (PE) Pipes’. ‘The composition of technical committees responsible for the formulation of this standard is given in Annex D. ‘This edition 8.5 incorporates Amendment No, 1 (October 1996), Amendment No. 2 (October 2000), Amendment No. 3 September 2003), Amendment No. 4 (September 2004) and Amendment No, 5 (Ausust 2006). Side bar indicates modification of the text as tho rosult of incorporation of the amondmonts. For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, oxprossing the rosult of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance with 18 2: 1960 Rules for rounding off numerical valuce (revised )- The aumbor Sf eignificant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard,IS 4984; 1995 Indian Standard HIGH DENSITY POLYETHYLENE PIPES FOR WATER SUPPLY — SPECIFICATION ( Fourth Revision ) 1 SCOPE ‘This Indian Standard lays down requirements for high density polyethylene pipes from 16 aan to 1 000 mm nominal diameter afpressure rating from 0.25 MFa to 1.6 MPa in material grades of PE63, P80, and PE 100, foruse for buried Water 8 DESIGNATION 3.1 Pipes shall be designated according to the grade of material ( see 3.2 ) followed by pressure tating (s2e8.8 )androminal dicmoter (see 2-4 ) For exemple, PE 63 PN 10 DN 200 indicatos 4 pipe pertaining to material grade 63, pressure mains and services and for water supply shove rating 1.0 MPa and ontaide nominal Aismetes Bround, both inside and outside buildings, 200 miss, 2. B-4.2 Through a closable opening in one of the locking plugs, the pipe shall be tinea sine water at ambient temperature, Tt shall be then ut in g water bath at the test tomperature of B0'C (pormissible deviation 41°C) and kept in the bath for minimum one hour to adjust the temperature » B-4.3 The pressure in the pipe ehall then be increased to the test pressure (p) gradually and without shock preferably within 10 to 30 seconds in the bath whose temperature has been adjusted in accordance with B-4.2. Tho pressure with 2 permissible deviation of +2.3 gercent shall be maintained for the period laid own in Table 6, ‘The test presure (p) shall be calculated a: lows from the minimum dimensions given in the Table 3 or 4 or 5, as the case moy be and the gorvesponding induced stress values given in Table 6. 2058 a where test pressure in MPa: minimum wall thickness in mm; induced stress in MPa: and vutside diameter of pipe, ia mm. C-1.2 Thermometer — Graduated ta 0.5°C. C-L.3 Test Specimens — Fither 3 complete sections of pipe, approximately 200 mm long, ‘shall be taken as test pieces, ar where the pipe diameter is greator than 200 mma, pieces of pipe of about 200 mm axial length’ and with an approximate circumferential are length of 200 ‘mm shall be prepared by cutting, In such eases, the entize ciroumference of approximately 200 mm long seotion of pipe shall be divided into Pieces measuringapproximately 200mm square. ‘The direction of the pipe axis shall be marked on. the pieces. All pieces are required tobe tested. A mark shall be scribed on the external surface approximately 50 mm from each end of the test pisces in the axial direction of pipe (in the case, of complete section of pipo, the mark shall be soribed around the whole ciscumference). The stance between the two marks, J, (reference length), shall bo approximately 160 mm and shall be measured to the nearest 0.25 mm at ambient temperature, 0-2 PROCEDURE C-2.1 Place the test pieces concave side up on a glass plate previously dusted with talcum, to enswe that changes in length take place u ‘unimpeded. The test pieces shall not touch sech of C-2.2 Set the oven tomperatureat 110£2°C.
