Science Notes 1

The document defines key terms in food chains and webs like producers, consumers, carnivores, herbivores, and decomposers. It then classifies different organisms as producers, consumers, or decomposers. The document explains that food chains show the flow of energy from one organism to another starting with the sun as the original energy source. Producers like plants are the first living thing in food chains. Humans are classified as apex consumers or omnivores. Finally, the document identifies food chains within a sample food web.

2 review questions

1- Define the terms

a- Prey: an animal that is eaten by a predator
b- Carnivore: a consumer that only eats other animals
c- Consumer: organisms that must eat other organisms to get their energy and nutrients.
Animals are consumer organisms.
d- Decomposer: organisms that get their energy they need by breaking down dead matter
and waste products.

2- Which terms best describes each of the following

a- An animal that eats other animals
- Consumer
b- An animal that only eats plants
- Herbivore
c- Organism that makes their own food
- Producers
d- The process plants use to make their food
- Photosynthesis

3- State what the arrows in the food chain indicate.

- The triangle part of the arrow indicates the animal (consumer) and the other side of
the arrow indicating the animal that is been or will be eaten (prey).

4- Why is the sun always included as the original energy source in food chains.
- The Sun gives out light energy to the plants whereas it is the original energy
source to every organisms- first, plants are eaten by animal then those animals
are eaten by other animals and etc.

5- Explain why a producer is the first living thing in a food chain

- The reason why that the producer is the first living thing in a food chain is because
that without the producers we will not have a healthy ecosystem- producers are
really vital for the food chain to go on and on, they are the food for the smaller
animals and technically also the food for bigger animals. All food, energy and
nutrients are created by produces.

6- Group the following organisms as produces, consumers or decomposers

a- Producers
- Grass
- Acacia tree
b- Consumers
- Grasshopper
- Mouse
- Eagle
c- Decomposers
- Fungi
- Bacteria
7- Discuss whether humans are
a- Produces or consumers
- Consumers: because we do not produce energy or nutrients to other organisms
b- Carnivores, herbivores or omnivores
- Omnivores: can eat both plants and animals
c- An apex consumer or a lower order consumer
- An apex order consumer: hence do not have natural enemies that eat humans

8- In the food web shown in Figure 5.2.9 on page 197, identify the:
a- Producer- plants
b- Primary consumers- snail, grub aphid and small animals
c- Secondary sources- beetle and small animals
d- Apex predator- large bird

9- Identify three food chains that are contained within the food web shown in figure 5.2.9
a- Plants small bird large bird
b- Plants snail beetle large bird
c- Plants aphid small bird
large bird

10- Match each of the following organisms to the appropriate term.

a- Producer: eucalyptus tree
b- Herbivore: snail
c- Omnivore: small bird
d- Carnivore: hawk
e- Decomposer: bacteria

11- Use the organisms in question 10 to draw a food chain

Sun Eucalyptus tree snail small bird hawk
bacteria
