Midterm 2 Corrected

The document provides instructions for Test 2 in the course CIVE 2101 - Engineering Mechanics at Carleton University. It outlines that: 1) The test is 1.5 hours long and must be completed and submitted as a single PDF file within this time limit. 2) In the event of technical issues, students should email their solutions along with evidence of the error. 3) The test contains two questions - the first asks students to determine the equilibrium angle and stability for a spring-loaded system, the second asks students to calculate velocities given rolling without sliding.

Test 2 (WITH E-PROCTORING), Winter 2021

Please read these instructions carefully

1) Time limit: 1.5 hrs. (= 90 min.)
2) The test/exam must be completed and submitted by uploading through CuLearn within 1.5 hours
of the time it is made available to students in CuLearn, with the exception of students receiving
accommodations through the Paul Menton Center(PMC). Your solutions must be submitted in
a single PDF file named as “firstname-lastname.pdf”. When you scan or photograph your
solution, make sure that they are not blurry, and are organized (please write the page numbers,
your name and student number). Use your own papers to write the solutions. It is not
necessary to print the pdf file of the test/exam questions (hence no need for printer).
PMC students are required to submit their written work through CuLearn using the same process
described above, after the time allocated to them. For example, if a PMC student is given 100%
extra time, the student needs to upload the PDF file to CuLearn within 3 hours after the test/exam
is made available to the students. CuLearn will flag the submission as late, but the test will be
accepted without penalty.
The CuLearn uploading of the single PDF file of the student’s test/exam answers follows
the same process as the practice test conducted on January 28.
3) In the event of any technical difficulty with CuLearn, please email the pdf file of your work to Prof.
Sarkar (abhijit.sarkar@carleton.ca) and your teaching assistant Mr. Brandon Robinson along
with the evidence (i.e. screenshot etc.) of technical error. The email submission is discouraged and
should be used only as the last option.
4) Answer all questions. There is no choice.
5) Write your name and student number and the corresponding question number on the top of each
page you use to answer the questions.
6) Show all necessary steps to support your answer.
7) For all numerical calculations, carry only 4 digits after decimal point. Marks will be deducted if
the correct student number is not used for numerical values/calculations.
8) If you feel that any information is incorrect or incomplete, make a reasonable assumption, state it
clearly, and proceed. DO NOT ASK QUESTIONS.
9) Copyright notice ( c 2020): This work is the intellectual property of the instructor and teaching assis-
tants (unless otherwise noted), and is protected by law. Unless a users right in Canada’s Copyright
Act covers the particular use, students must not publish, post on a public Internet site, sell, rent, or

and/or legal action against you.1

Question 1 (50 marks)

In the figure below, the spring will always remain horizontal as the collar C moves frictionlessly along the
vertical rod and the spring is undeformed/unstretched for α = 0.
(a) For equilibrium, find α in the range 0 < α < 90o .
(b) Is this equilibrium stable or unstable?
Assume the spring stiffness k = 12 N/m, the length of the bar AB, L=2 m and the mass of the bar AB,
M = (3 + 0.Y )kg where Y =the last digit of your student number.

Question 2 (50 marks)

Compute the velocity of the point B and the angular velocity of the rod AB assuming the disk rolls
without sliding and the point B slides (see the figure below). Assume the radius of the disk, R = 0.5 m,
the length of the rod AB, L = 1 m and the angular velocity of the disk, ω = (5 + Y ) rad/s where
Y =the last digit of your student number.
