Assignment 1 Eng Mech

This document outlines 8 individual assignment problems involving calculating forces and moments on structures: 1. Calculate the resultant vector and direction on a screw eye given two forces. Also find the vector difference. 2. Determine the magnitude and direction of a force F if the resultant is to be 750 N along the x-axis. 3. Represent the resultant of four forces and a moment by an equivalent force and moment at a point. Calculate the magnitude, direction, and moment arm. 4. Write the vector expression for the tension in a cable attached to a fixed bracket.

Individual Assignment 1 (10%)

1. Using trigonometric rules, determine the magnitude of the resultant vector acting on the
screw eye and its direction measured clockwise from the x axis.
 Write the vector sum (the resultant) as a vector in terms of the unit vectors i and j
and then write a unit vector u along the vector sum?
 Determine the vector difference V2 – V1?

2. If the resultant force acting on the bracket is to be 750 N directed along the positive x
axis, determine the magnitude of F and its direction?

3. Represent the resultant of the four forces and one moment by an equivalent force R at A
and resultant moment M?
 Determine the magnitude and direction of the resultant force R?
 Determine the moment arm (d) of the resultant force R?
4. The cable exerts a tension of 2 kN on the fixed bracket at A. Write the vector expression
for the tension T.
5. The tension cable T1 and T2 is 3 kN and 5 kN respectively. Determine the moment about
‘A’?

6. The light right angle boom which supports the 400 kg cylinder is supported by three
cables and a ball and socket joint at O attached to the vertical x-y surface. Determine the
reactions at O and the cable tensions?
7. Determine the force in each member of the loaded truss? All triangles are isosceles. (Use
method of joint)

8. Calculate the forces in members AB, BG, and GF. (Use method of section)
