Career Report Part c-2
I interviewed Carolina Lopez on November 12th, and she is the event coordinator at
Marriott's Grande Vista Resort in Florida. I selected to interview her because her job sounded
very interesting to me and the location is exactly where I want to be. She got her Bachelor’s
Degree- in Hospitality Administration/Managment at Universidad San Ignacio de Loyola in
Lima, Peru. She started at the company in January 2013 as an Administrative Assistant and in
June 2017 where she was promoted to event coordinator and that is where she has been since.
Before, she was an Administrative Assistant here, she was a front of house supervisor at
Rainforest Cafe.
Mission/Purpose of the Agency/Department
Marriott's mission statement is “to enhance the lives of our customers by creating and
enabling unsurpassed vacation and leisure experiences” (Marriott, 2023). This short and simple
mission statement is effective in showing Marriotts motivations. There is not a mission statement
for the recreation department for showing Marriotts motivations.
Clientele Served
The people served here mostly want to relax and have a little getaway from their
everyday lives. Ms Lopez said the average person there is usually in their late 40s to 80s because
of the golf program and the location. Most people retire and go to Florida, this is one of the
places they go. There is a membership requirement to play in the golf program, which is one of
their biggest attractions. Ms Lopez said that the people who usually come are local, but they do
get many families on vacation. So many people in the area come because the older men love the
golf program and come there to relax and play golf.
Services and Programs Provided
There are many services and programs that the Marriott Grande Vista Resort has to offer.
Their golf program is a very big attraction, and they have a 9-hole golf course. They have
multiple pools on site, as well as whirlpool spas. There is a barbecue/picnic area, beach area,
boathouse for fishing rentals, a playground, and a recreation center where people can play
different kinds of sports. They have all of the facilities to run these activities on-site.
Staffing
She was not sure how many people work at the entire resort but she said around 350 staff.
There are around 40 staff in the recreation department working around the pool and in the
recreation building including the full-time salary members. Most of the lifeguards, waitresses,
help desk oporators, and caddies are part-time employees. They do not have seasonal employees
because they have clients who swim and golf all year round.
Funding Source
Marriott is a public company so it gets many of its funds from shareholders. One of the
biggest shareholders is JP Morgan Bank and Fidelity Management and Research Co. They also
have a very marketable brand with plenty of investors. Marriott’s profits are in the billions
annually (Schwab 2023).
Professional Issues
Ms Lopez said her favorite part about her job is seeing families enjoying time there
because it could be the only vacation they take all year and she is glad they are enjoying it. She
did mention some challenges one of them was pleasing everyone’s specific needs. Ms Lopez told
me about a story where a group of 18 people wanted to put huge tables together so she got the
people to round them up and put them together and when everything was set the group changed
their mind so they had to put them all back. Ms Lopez said that was one of her worst
experiences. Other than that she loves her job and rarely has those occurrences.
