LESSON 1:

COMMUNICATION PROCESSES, PRINCIPLES, AND ETHICS

Individuals define communication in varied ways. These definitions imply that the
way people define communication influences how they think and behave towards
other people. There are certain properties of communication upon which linguists and
experts agree describe its nature. Human communication is a dynamic, symbolic and
interactive culture-bound process of exchange of messages. Communication is the
heart of human relationships.
At the end of this lesson, you should be able to:

1. describe the nature and elements of verbal and non-verbal communication in

various multicultural contexts;
2. characterize communication in the digital age;
3. analyze the principles and process of effective communication; and
4. explain the ethics of effective communication in the modern age.

Activity 1: What I Know

Examine the illustrations below. Which best describes your usual family
mealtime?
Watch the following two commercials on Filipino mealtime and closely
observe how the family members communicate with one another.

1. Video Commercial of Lucky Me- The Most Disturbing Dinner,

2. Video Commercial of Lucky Me- Hapag- Usapan Commercial

https://www. youtube.com/watch?v=Zw10qmW8vFw

Pair up and discuss answers to the following questions:

What went wrong in the communication of the family members?

What could have worked better in their communication?

For both exercises:

How can mealtime promote effective communication and family bond?

How important is mealtime for Filipinos?

Activity 2: It Makes Sense
Form group of four to five members and reflect on the following questions.
Have you experienced the same thing when you were misunderstood by others?
Have you experienced the same thing when people did not listen to you? How did
the conversation go?
Share your answers with your group mates and prepare to present to the class
the group's understanding of effective communication.
James W. Neuliep (2006) lists eight properties of communication. With your
group members, discuss what each property means. Write your consolidated
insights on the second column. Then consult credible authors and professionals
about their views on each communication property. Write their definitions on the third
column.

Activity 3: We’ll Figure It Out

A Model of Communication

What are the elements of communication?

What are barriers to communication?

You are not yet done figuring out communication. Let us dig deeper! Below is a common

Using the five photos and the two commercials as your guide, characterize
miscommunication and communication in the modern age.

When does miscommunication happen?

Interestingly, you are in the era that communication has radically evolved from face-to-face
interaction to a virtual world. Before you compare online and offline communication, let’s have fun
first. Try classifying yourself as social media user. Who are you? Share your answer to a
seatmate.
