English for Academic and Professional Purposes
Date: Aug. 21-25, 2023
I. Objective: At the end of the lesson, students are expected to:
- Explain what critical reading is.
- Define fallacy and identify different kinds of fallacy.
- Evaluate whether and argument is sound logical or not.
II. Subject Matter: Reading text critically
III. Materials: Laptop, PowerPoint Presentation.
References: Saqueton G, Uychoco M. (2016) English for Academic and Professional
Purposes.
IV. Procedure:
A. Preliminary Activities
1. Prayer
2. Greetings
3. Checking of attendance
B. Motivation
The teacher will be introducing a story which will be read and as well as be
presented on a PowerPoint presentation. Through reading the story, students will be
encouraged to participate and at the same time imagine the whole scenario. This will
serve as the basis for starting the lesson, which is Critical Reading as well.

C. Discussion Proper:
Using the story “ The Necklace “by Guy De Maupassant, the teacher will ask series of
questions such as:
- What was the story about?
- Who can briefly discuss the distinguished characteristics of each character in the
story?
- What can you say about the main character? What are your thoughts about her?
After thorough answering of questions, the students now has an idea on how to
critically read story after that, the teacher will then proceed with introducing the
lesson which is Critical Reading and the five logical fallacies.
D. Activity:
Each student will be presenting one famous line that left a mark on them. They will
be given 10 minutes to finish the task and then present and explain it in front of the
class.
E. Abstraction:
The teacher will recap the lesson by asking students what they have learned with the
discussion and express their idea or thoughts about the lesson. Through letting the
students express their ideas, they will be confident in public speaking and develop
their self-esteem.
F. Evaluation
Instruction: Read the story of Edgar Allan Poe Entitled “The tell-tale heart” and
answer the following questions. Copy and answer on a ½ Crosswise.
1. How would you describe the narrator of the story?
2. What was the story about?
3. Why do you think Edgar Allan Poe created the story? Was there a purpose? Why
or why not?
4. Was he successful in accomplishing his purpose?
5. Can you relate to the story? In what way?
6. What are the five logical fallacies and their importance?
G. Assignment:
Answer your assignment on a ½ crosswise. Copy and answer.
1. What does it mean to be a critical reader?
2. Why is critical reading considered an active process of discovery?
3. Why is Critical reading important?
