The lower quartile (Q1) is 20.95, indicating 25% of students scored at or below 20.95. The 9th decile (D9) is 44.25, meaning 90% of students scored at or below 44.25. The 70th percentile (P70) is 29.5, so 70% of students scored at or below 29.5.

MEASURES OF POSITION OF GROUPED DATA

Measures of position, also known as measures of central tendency, are statistical values that provide
information about the location or position of data within a dataset. When dealing with grouped data,
where the data is organized into intervals or classes, there are different methods to calculate these
measures.
The common measures of position for grouped data include:
1. Midpoint: The midpoint of a class interval is the average of the upper and lower class boundaries. It
represents the approximate center of the interval.
2. Cumulative Frequency: Cumulative frequency is the running total of frequencies as you move through
the classes. It helps in analyzing the distribution and allows you to determine the position of a particular
value in relation to the entire dataset.
3. Median: The median is the value that divides the data into two equal halves. For grouped data, you can
estimate the median by finding the class interval that contains the median value and then use interpolation
to determine the exact position within that interval.
4. Quartiles: Quartiles divide the data into four equal parts, each representing 25% of the observations.
The lower quartile (Q1) is the value below which 25% of the data falls, the median (Q2) represents the
middle 50% of the data, and the upper quartile (Q3) is the value below which 75% of the data falls.
5. Percentiles: Percentiles divide the data into 100 equal parts. The pth percentile is the value below
which p% of the data falls. Similar to the median, for grouped data, interpolation is used to estimate the
position within a class interval.
These measures provide valuable insights into the distribution and position of data within grouped
datasets. They are useful for summarizing and analyzing the data to make informed decisions or draw
conclusions.

Interpretation of Measures of Position

Measures of
Position Interpretation
Quartiles - Q1 (25th percentile): 25% of the data falls below this point. It represents the lower
boundary of the middle 50% of the data. Also known as the lower quartile.
- Q2 (50th percentile or median): 50% of the data falls below this point. It represents the
midpoint of the data.
- Q3 (75th percentile): 75% of the data falls below this point. It represents the upper
boundary of the middle 50% of the data. Also known as the upper quartile.
Deciles - D1 The first decile represents the value below which 10% of the data falls. It indicates the
lower boundary of the first 10% of the dataset.
- D2 The value below which 20% of the data falls. It indicates the lower boundary of the
first 20% of the dataset.
- D3 The value below which 30% of the data falls. It indicates the lower boundary of the
first 30% of the dataset.
Percentiles - P1 The value below which 1% of the data falls. It represents an extremely low value in the
dataset.
- P2 The value below which 2% of the data falls. It provides further insight into the lower
end of the distribution.
- P3 The value below which 3% of the data falls. It continues to provide information about
the lower end of the distribution.
Problem:
Grade 10 students are required to take the Semi-Finals Examination. It simply aim
to indicate students' overall knowledge in subjects and test their ability to use their
knowledge. The students from grade 10-Chivalry of Malabon National High
School Obtained the following scores in the Semi-Final in Mathematics.
Find the ff. Measures of Position:
Q1….?
D9…..?
P70…..?
D6…..?
P65…..?
The table shows the frequency distribution of scores for a class of students who took a semi-final
examination. The scores are grouped into different classes and frequencies. Based on this
information, answer the following questions:
Class Interval f <cf Lower Boundary
46-50 3 40 45.5
41-45 4 37 40.5
36-40 1 33 35.5
