Unit 5
Social Change
Pretest
1. Based on your experiences, what are the changes that you have observed in society 8-10 years
ago?
 Social change is the process through which human interactions and connections modify
cultural and social institutions over time, resulting in societal change. Technology is more
active than before, buildings are everywhere, and the LGBTQ community has the right to
self-defense. These are some of the societal changes I've witnessed in the previous ten
years. People prefer to spend their time online and on social media rather than reading
books.

2. Give and describe (briefly) at least 5 of those changes and identify their possible causes using
the table below.

Activity 1

1. What image can you associate social change with? Explain.

For whatever we undertake, social change necessitates that we think carefully and use our critical
thinking abilities. As well as for items we may require in the future.
2. Give a brief description of the causes of social change and give examples each.
Cause of social change Example
Technology  Improve education
 The telephone
Technology acts as a driving factor in the
globalization process, resulting in societal
changes. The internet facilitates the
dissemination of ideas that have an impact on
people's attitudes. Some people's everyday
routines have also been altered as a result of
technological advancements, since they may
now travel to other locations in less time.
Environment  Deforestation
 Air pollution
Humans and the environment have a symbiotic
relationship. Natural catastrophes affect a large
number of individuals who live in susceptible
places. As a result of their bad actions, such as
producing more CO2, people interact with the
environment, amplifying the consequences of
these calamities.

which leads to changes such as urbanization,
industrialization, and other socioeconomic
reforms.

3. Write an argumentative essay on whether those social changes were advantageous or

disadvantageous in your community.

Activity 2

1. List at least 10 things as products of globalization that you use daily. Give its country of
origin.
 Colgate – new York city
 Downy – Europe
 Nescafe – Switzerland
 Coca cola - Atlanta, Georgia
 Palmolive – new York city
 Iphone/ apple phone – san Francisco
 Magi - Switzerland
 Condensed milk – France
 Hot dog – Germany, United states
 Samsung – Suwon-si, South Korea

2. Analyze these products and reflect on the benefit and harm they carry (do not limit your
analysis on the physical aspect of the products).
 Growing interdependence of the world's economies, cultures, and populations, brought
about by cross-border trade in goods and services, technology, and flows of investment,
people, and information. These products may put people in danger if they are not used
correctly. When using these products, people should read the instructions to prevent
accidents. It can help with our daily needs and daily activities in life

Activity 3

1. Discuss the characteristics of urbanization that you have observed.

 Organizational facilities, residential and employment centers, communications systems,
infrastructure investments, population density, family, marriage, occupation, class
extremes, social heterogeneity, social distance, interaction systems, and mobility are
some of the features of urbanization. I've seen that the metropolitan cities have the fastest
rate of urbanization.
2. Argue on whether the Philippines as a whole and your locality, in particular, has all the
features of urbanization as discussed above.
 The Philippines as a country is a rapidly rising one. Today, the Philippines have late-
growing cities as a result of urbanization, but it is failing due to a number of key issues
that plague all urbanization.
3. Do you think the Philippines is moving towards the trends in urbanization and catching
with the policy recommendations for urbanization as mentioned above? Why?
 Yes, for me, because my nation, the Philippines, is one of the fastest urbanizing in East
Asia and the Pacific, as I've seen. Many prospects for growth and poverty reduction may
arise as a result of this. Cities may become development engines if they are adequately
designed and managed. For some in the Philippines, rapid urbanization has offered new
employment, educational possibilities, and better living circumstances.

4. Is urbanization more of harm or benefit? Please explain.

 Urbanization increases productivity due to positive externalities and economies of scale.
This feature of urbanization is also advantageous to the environment because services
contaminate the environment less than industry. Better transportation, increased
education options, recycling procedures, and constantly improved technology are some of
the advantages of urbanization. There will be Internet access available.

Activity 3

1. as a Filipino, do you think your community still possesses the identified Asian values? In
what way? Please represent your answer through caricature, collage, video, song, etc.

2. What values do you think need to be continuously present in your community and those
that may be modified? Please explain.
 People in my neighborhood are really helpful and accountable for their actions as well as
their families. It is really being very generous because some individuals will take it for
granted. They'll take advantage of the kindness you've displayed.
Assessment

1. How can you become an agent of social change?

 The process of modifying attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors in order to solve societal
problems in a good way is known as social change. Being a social change agent is a
proactive way to help you, your relationships, your community, and the rest of the world
live in a safer, healthier future. First, people should demonstrate that it is in their best
interests. To attain the target you desire, we must listen, be alert, and be brave.

2. How COVID 19 Pandemic became an agent of social change?

 From personal connections to institutional processes to multinational cooperation, it has
impacted every area of life throughout the world. Covid-19 is bringing to light a
multitude of issues, challenges, and concerns that have long been hidden or unnoticed in
many communities. The pandemic's immense magnitude and the need to contain it on
several fronts at the same time are exposing a variety of flaws, insufficiencies, prejudices,
and deficiencies in many of our societal institutions. COVID-19 became an agent because
it forced us to accomplish something we hadn't done before. It stimulates individuals to
come up with new innovations since they are bored and can't go out and other things.

3. Analyze the social changes that took place in at least 2 Asian countries using the causes of
social change.
 When it comes to their people, China and the Philippines are undergoing significant
societal transformations. Because as the population rises, so does the need for supplies. In
addition, the government must fulfill the demand for food as well as the demands of the
general public. And now that there's a pandemic, all of that consumerism, increased
conflict, and greater danger has accelerated environmental destruction.

4. Conduct an interview/survey (through online or any means that would not compromise
your health and safety) to at least 5 people on the agents or factors that cause social
changes in your community. Let them explain who these agents influenced the culture in
your community.
