Lesson
Kinds of Craft Leather
1
Working with leather isn’t as hard as some people perceived it to be, it
is used as the primary material for a durable and classy product has begun
even in the earliest of time and will surely strive in a longer period in
comparison to plastics, woods and other flexible materials. Its
characteristics played a big role in the variety and choices of clothes, shoes,
bags, belts. holsters and many functional accessories.
In this module, you will be given an idealistic perception and
generalized understanding on the advantages and disadvantages of each
type of leather. A substantial lesson will be discussed to create a significant
understanding on the different kinds of leather, that will extensively offer a
wiser decision of materials to be used for a particular client and market.

What’s In
Reflect on the quotation “The only way to do great work is to love what you
do!”. It is certain that we might be sharing same thoughts on this, we may both come
to an understanding that this expresses an idea that whatever you love doing will
impressively ripple and create great works of product. This leathercraft awareness is
undisputable, but in a wider thinking, crafts are not just products of passion and the
mind. It is absolutely a product of a well-chosen materials. The introduction in the
previous modules and lesson will surely strengthen your conclusion on the
importance of Leathercraft in the production of commercialized merchandizes.

The following text is a news excerpt from Rappler, Philippines. Read and
understand its context by taking notes on these guide questions: Why do
you think the President tries to show off his shoes, considering he is the
busiest person in the country? What would you feel if you were the daughter
or the son of the shoemaker when you read this news article? How much
more would you feel if you were actually the one, who crafted and carefully
selected the materials for the shoes given to the president?
MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte a self-confessed shoe

Short reflection on the news article:

Our pride starts from the crafts that we make. It is not just about the
profit or the earnings that we gain that make us happy, but the legacy that
we create in these little things. As a student, you have to understand that
being talented is different from being skilled. These skills can be learned
under this particular course curriculum. It is such an important matter that
we know the framework that builds our craft- the leather and its kind. Here
you will understand and learn all about this. Put in mind that it is very
essential that we carefully select our materials in craft making.

What is It

City of Good Character

DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE
It is top priority that we consider the best material or the kind of
leather that we use in our craft. Nevertheless, if we will not put an extreme
effort on this, ideas and passion in making the craft will all be wasted.
It is a common understanding that the leather hide is the skin
removed from an animal and it has different layers which serve its purpose.
The importance of studying its parts is clearly defined on the reason that it
is identified clearly for the proper selection of leather that we are
going to use in crafts. It is a must that we consider the grades and quality of
leather to be able to decide on how the craft will be prepared, cut and
finished.

Types of leather according to

animal skin
As is known, there are many
types of leather that are
distinguished according to the
animal used to make them,
wanting to list the main ones, we
can find:

1.Bovine hides - cows, oxen,

bulls, calves, etc.
2.Sheep and goat skin - rams,
sheep, lambs, goats, cross-breeds
etc.
3.Exotic leather and skins -
ostriches or reptiles such as
crocodiles, snakes, lizards, iguanas
etc.
4.Fish skins- wolf fish, salmon, eel
etc.
5.Fine fur coats- minks, foxes,
opossums, etc.
6.Skins of wild animals -deer,
wolves, fallow deer, gazelles, etc.

Types of Leather Grades and Leather Qualities

1. Full Grain or Top Grain Leather- The best part of the hide coming from the
upper layer of the hide. This part as the thickest one can then be split into
various thickness by a splitting machine. This part shows the outermost
layer with natural scars and hair cell patters. Since considered the best
types of leather because of its durability and value it is most often used for
the production of upholstery, garment, shoes and saddlery.
2. Corrected or Embossed Grain – The second type of leather next to full grain
coming from hides that have an excessive amount of scratches or scars are
further processed by “correcting” the full grain skin. This is done through
buffing and sanding after splitting to a required thickness. The leather
usually results to an effect that will look flawless and smoother after
treatment but this is no longer the real or natural grain. The original texture
is reduced which also means its durability is also reduced, craftsmen opted
to embellish the leather with unique exotic prints to simulate the look
instead.
3. Split Suede – Refers to the functional and inexpensive leather hides coming
from the second layer or lower layer of the skin left after removing the Full
Grain, the suede on both sides. Usually comes in various thickness
depending on the treatment and application, sometimes processed with a
synthetic finish on one side and the other remain suede to create an artificial
look of Full Grain leather (finished split hide). As a byproduct of hide tanning
it is less costly and therefore utilized in products where Full Grain is not
required such as tool pouches, moccasins, suede garments etc. Used
extensively in lower cost furniture and garments and represented as
“Genuine Leather” which technically it still is although it may look like
something it is not.

City of Good Character

DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE
4. Nubuck Suede Grain – Refers to the “look but don’t touch leather because of
its sensitivity”. The Full Grain layer of the skin is given a suede effect by
lightly sanding the natural grain to open the hair cell and results in a velvety
suede feel. This process is done in reason of correcting imperfections in the
natural grain. It should be given soft handling since it is soft and has a very
sensitive effect.
5. Reconstituted, Bonded or Fibre Leather – Refers to the type of leather
which is recycled and has a particle board. Produce from remnants and
scraps of garments and scraps from shoe factories, recycled and bonded
with adhesive and treated with synthetic grain, hair cell pattern and finish to
look nearly the same full grain. Used widely to low priced garments,
upholstery products and handicrafts.
