PROCEDURE
Importance of lettering
1. The lettering in engineering drawing holds a very important factor which determines the
quality of an engineering drawing.
2. Lettering helps to set the overall tone of the drawing.
3. Lettering plays a major role in engineering drawing because it indicates the details of an
object on a drawing like dimensioning, name of the drawing etc.
Features of lettering
These are the features of a good lettering, they are:
1. Legibility- shape and space between letters and words
2. Uniformity- size and line thickness
3. Ease and rapidity in execution
1. Freehand lettering: It is done without the assistance of tools. Vertical capital letters are
preferred for most technical work. They performed within a 6×6 grid
2. Mechanical lettering: It is done with the aid of tools such as lettering guides, templates, etc.
3. Modern drawing: it is a type of lettering that was done with the computer-aided software.
Types of Lettering
There are basically three types of letterings, namely;
1. Vertical or Upright lettering
2. Slant or Italics lettering
3. Gothic or Block vertical lettering
