x iDX 3.0 iDirect Features and Chassis Licensing Guide

1 What Is iDirect Licensing?

iDirect offers several different types of licenses, depending on your iDX release, the features
you want to use on your networks, and your specific hardware.
Each license type is described in detail in the following sections.
NMS Server License — Introduced in iDS 7.0, an NMS license is required to operate the iDirect
NMS server. This license is obtained from the iDirect Technical Assistance Center (TAC) and
installed on your NMS server when you initially install or upgrade the iDirect software.
Included in the NMS license are specific features you may request, including:
• Geographic Map
• Global NMS
• SkyMonitor
• VNO User Groups
• CNO User Groups
Instructions for installing the NMS Server license are provided in the Network Upgrade
Procedure Guide for the specific release you are installing, which can be downloaded from
the TAC Web Page at http://tac.idirect.net).
Hub Timing Group License — Beginning in iDX Release 2.0, Hub Timing Group licenses are
required to enable chassis slots on both the 4-slot and 20-slot hub chassis. For new 5IF hub
owners, this method offers a way to “pay as you grow” such that you can activate one, some,
or all five timing groups as your networks grow. These licenses are obtained from the TAC,
based on specific information you provide, and are imported using the iBuilder License
Toolbar.

Note: Refer to Chapter 2, Acquiring and Applying iDirect Chassis Licenses for
information about obtaining, installing, and activating Hub Timing Group
licenses.
Hardware-Specific Feature License — Introduced in iDX Release 2.0, Hardware-Specific
Feature licenses are software feature licenses available for specific remote modems or hub
line cards. These licenses include:
• Evolution X3 AES Link Encryption
• Evolution X5 AES Link Encryption
• Evolution eP100 AES Link Encryption
• Evolution X5 Upstream Spread Spectrum

installing, and activating Hardware-Specific Feature licenses.
Protocol Processor Blade Feature License — Beginning in iDX Release 2.1, a PP blade
encryption license is required to enable Link Encryption and TRANSEC on any PP blade that
communicates with the licensed remotes. To enable this license, a valid license file must be
copied to a specific directory on your PP blade server.

Note: Refer to Chapter 4, Protocol Processor Blade Feature Licensing for information
about obtaining, installing, and activating Protocol Processor Blade Feature
licenses.
SatManage License — Functionality within SatManage is enabled by the use of license keys. A
SatManage Core license is required for all SatManage installations. Licenses for other
SatManage packages are optional. When you order SatManage modules from iDirect, you will
be asked to include the following licensing information:
• Eth0 MAC address of your SatManage server(s)
• Serial number of your SatManage server(s)
• Duration of the license you are requesting
• Number of circuits you want to license in blocks of 250 for the packages indicated
below.

Note: If you have SatManage Enterprise Edition without the NOC Toolset enabled and
would like to purchase a license to enable that module, please include the
virtual MAC address as well. The following command issued at the Linux
command line will produce this information:
grep "ethernet0.generatedAddress" /opt/Intra/machines/SE-RACSE-RAC.vmx
| grep -v Offset
Licenses are available for the following SatManage packages:

2 Acquiring and Applying
iDirect Chassis Licenses

Now that you have reviewed the introduction to iDirect licensing in Chapter 1, What Is iDirect
Licensing?, you are ready to learn how to acquire a license and how to apply it to your iDirect
network.

Note: The terms “Chassis License” and “Hub Timing Group License” are used
synonymously in this guide.
Introduced in iDX Release 2.0, Hub Timing Group licenses are required to enable chassis slots
on both the 4-slot and 20-slot hub chassis. For new 5IF hub owners, this method offers a way
to “pay as you grow” such that you can activate one, some, or all five timing groups as your
networks grow. These licenses are obtained from the TAC, based on specific information you
provide, and are imported using the iBuilder License Toolbar.

Note: All users who are installing or upgrading to iDX Release 2.0 or later are
required to obtain a Hub Timing Group license. Otherwise, the chassis will be
disabled following the upgrade.
Hub Timing Group licenses are required for 4-slot chassis, 20-slot chassis and daisy-chained
chassis. These licenses are controlled by a service in the NMS called the Chassis Manager
(cmsvr).

Note: Hub Timing Group licenses are not required for private hubs or mini-hubs.
Anyone who is installing or upgrading to a new iDX release is required to complete the
applicable Upgrade/Installation Survey (available at http://tac.idirect.net) and to provide
specific information about each chassis in order to generate the licenses.

2.1 Using Chassis Manager in Multi-NMS Configurations

Now that you understand that you are required to have a Chassis license, let’s further explain
the unique situation when you are using the Chassis Manager in a multi-NMS Configuration
(running independent NMS servers in one network).
Here are some considerations that you must review before you acquire and apply a Chassis
license to your network:
• In a shared Chassis environment (when multiple NMS servers share the same Chassis), the
NMS that controls the Chassis must be upgraded to the new release before any of the
other NMS servers are upgraded.
• For HNO/VNO configurations, this means the HNO NMS must be upgraded before any
of the VNO NMS systems.

iDX 3.0 iDirect Features and Chassis Licensing Guide 5

How Do I Get a Hub Timing Group License?

• In a non-VNO environment, if the current chassis controller NMS is not the one to be
upgraded first, control of the chassis may be transferred to the first NMS Server.
• When multiple NMS servers are running this release and the Chassis is shared, all NMS
systems must have IP connectivity to the server that is running Chassis Manager.
• Each Hub line card must be assigned a Chassis slot. The Chassis Manager is the tool that is
used to assign slots on a Chassis. The Chassis Manager requires IP connectivity to
successfully perform this task.
• You may use ACLs, firewalls, or other security measures to allow shared access to the
Chassis Manager from multiple NMS servers, while at the same time preventing these NMS
servers from accessing each other.

Note: These conditions apply in all implementations for iDX Release 2.0 and later,
not just those with “Pay-As-You-Grow” 5-IF chassis and/or VNOs.
• To communicate with the Chassis Manager, use TCP port 15261 for inter-process
communication and port 15262 for console sessions.

Note: For more information about using the Chassis Manager in multi-NMS
configurations, refer to the iBuilder User’s Guide section titled “Sharing a 20-
Slot Chassis in a Multi-NMS System.”

Note: For information about changing the chassis IP address, refer to the iBuilder
User’s Guide section titled “Changing a Chassis IP Address.”

2.2 How Do I Get a Hub Timing Group License?

In order to successfully acquire a Hub Timing Group license, you must complete the following
procedures in the order shown:
• Step 1. Request a Hub Timing Group License
• Step 2. Enable Download Permissions on Chassis Manager

3 Feature Licensing

Software features such as Link Encryption, TRANSEC, and Spread Spectrum are available for
licensing on specific remotes and hub line cards. In this way, you pay for licensed features
only on the equipment on which the features are actually used, which provides a simple,
scalable upgrade path to new features.

Note: Both the Link Encryption and TRANSEC features also require a license to be
installed on the Protocol Processor blade. See Chapter 4, Protocol Processor
Blade Feature Licensing for instructions.
This method is implemented through iBuilder, which helps you to avoid costly site visits.

3.1 What Feature Licenses Are Available?

Feature licenses are required to enable certain features in your iDirect network. Table 1

• Step 4. Activate the Licensed Feature

STEP 1. FILL OUT A PURCHASE ORDER

Contact your iDirect salesperson and fill out a Purchase Order to send to iDirect. In the
Purchase Order, please specify the feature you are requesting. Once your Purchase Order is
processed through iDirect, you will be contacted and asked for a license request file. You can
create this file using iBuilder iDX Release 2.0 or later, or you can create it manually.

STEP 2. CREATE A LICENSE REQUEST FILE AND REQUEST A LICENSE

There are two options available to you for creating a license request file. Procedures for these
options are included in this section.
These options are:
• Option A: Creating a License Request File in iBuilder, which explains how to create a
feature license request file for your specific hardware by exporting the license data from
iBuilder.
• Option B. Creating a License Request File Manually, which explains how to manually
create a feature license request file.

Option A: Creating a License Request File in iBuilder

To obtain your feature licenses, create a license request file and send your license request to
iDirect. This section explains how to create a feature license request file for your existing
hardware by exporting the license data from iBuilder.
The following information is required by iDirect for creating a license file, and can be
exported using iBuilder:
• Hardware Model Type
• Serial Number
• Derived ID (DID)

licences being requested for each remote or line card.

Option B. Creating a License Request File Manually

This section explains how to manually create a feature license request file. This option is
useful if you do not have access to the iBuilder 2.0 or later client software.
1. For each piece of hardware on which you want to license a feature, determine the model
type, serial number and derived ID.
2. Create a .csv file and save the component information you gathered into the file (see
Figure 13 for a sample .csv file) to send to iDirect.
3. Send the .csv file to your iDirect licensing contact person along with the specific licences
being requested for each remote or line card.

STEP 3. IMPORT THE LICENSE FILE INTO YOUR IDIRECT NETWORK

Once your license request is received, iDirect will open a support ticket and an iDirect
iLicense representative will contact you. iDirect will then issue your licenses and email your
license key file(s) to you. You will receive one tar.gz file per model type, regardless of the
quantity of that model type you have. This file contains all license keys for the features you
have purchased.
After you receive a license key file from iDirect, you need to import the file into your iDirect
network. Save the file to a local folder on your PC or laptop.
To import your licenses into iBuilder:
1. Select License Toolbar from the iBuilder View Menu to view the License Toolbar. (Figure
14).

5. Click Open to import the license file. The message, “Licenses are downloaded
successfully” displays.

6. Click OK.
7. You will see changes pending in the iBuilder tree for the remotes and/or line card for
which you imported licenses. Right-click the remotes and/or line cards with changes
pending and apply the changes.
You have successfully imported your licences and are ready to continue to Step 4. Activate
the Licensed Feature.

STEP 4. ACTIVATE THE LICENSED FEATURE

Now that you have imported the license, you can configure your remotes and line cards in
iBuilder to use the licensed feature. For example:
• If you licensed multiple TDMA channels on an XLC-M line card, you can now configure the
line card in Multiple Channel TDMA Receive Mode and you can add multiple receive
carriers to the line card.
• If you licensed link encryption for a remote, you can now enable link encryption on the
Remote Information tab.
• If you licensed and XLC-11 line card for downstream Spread Spectrum, you can now select
an iNFINITI outbound carrier configured for Spread Spectrum as the transmit carrier for
that line card.
Explaining the details of the configuration of each licensed feature is outside the scope of the
Licensing Guide. For instructions on how to configure the various features of your iDirect
network, including licensed features, see the iBuilder User Guide.
Enforcement of the high-speed COTM feature differs from the enforcement of other licensed
features. A high-speed COTM license is enforced during operation rather than by
configuration. If an unlicensed mobile remote exceeds 150 mph, the remote issues the event
“COTM License Violated” and all user traffic to the remote is stopped. User traffic is resumed
only when the unlicensed remote’s speed falls below the 150 mph limit.

4 Protocol Processor Blade
Feature Licensing

As introduced in iDX Release 2.1, a Protocol Processor blade encryption license is required to
enable Link Encryption and TRANSEC on any PP blade that communicates with the licensed
remotes.

Note: See the iBuilder User Guide for details on configuring Link Encryption for your
remotes and/or TRANSEC for yours DVB-S2 networks.

STEP 1. REQUEST A PP BLADE ENCRYPTION LICENSE

Go to the TAC website (http://tac.idirect.net), download and fill out the
Upgrade/Installation Survey for your release. To receive the correct PP blade license, you
must supply the Eth0 MAC address of each PP blade requiring a license by completing and
submitting the Upgrade/Installation Survey.

STEP 2. INSTALL A PP BLADE LICENSE

After you receive your compressed PP blade license file from the iDirect TAC and have
upgraded to the new release, you are ready to install your link encryption license on your PP
blades.
On each PP blade on which you want to install a license:
1. Use WinSCP and log on to the PP blade as idirect.
2. Copy the compressed license file you received from iDirect to the /tmp folder.
3. Using a terminal emulator (such as puTTY) create an SSH connection to the PP blade and
log on as idirect.
4. Switch to root user by entering the following command:
su -
5. Enter the root password at the prompt.
6. Change to the /tmp directory by entering the following commands
cd /tmp

iDX 3.0 iDirect Features and Chassis Licensing Guide 21

7. Copy the compressed PP license file to the /etc/idirect/pp directory by entering the
following command:
cp <filename> /etc/idirect/pp
Where: <filename> is the name of the compressed license file in the format
YYYY_MM_DD_PP_LINK_ENCRYPTION.tar.gz.
8. Change directory to /etc/idirect/pp by entering the following command:
cd /etc/idirect/pp
9. List the files in the directory by entering the following command:
ll
You should see your license .gz file in the directory listing. For example:
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 976 May 12 22:41
2010_05_28_PP_LINK_ENCRYPTION.tar.gz
10. Uncompress the license file by entering the following command:
tar zxvf <filename>
Where: <filename> is the name of the compressed license file. This will result in an
uncompressed license file with a name similar to the file name in the following example:
00:10:18:1C:BE:41_license.lic
11. Copy the uncompressed license file and rename it as license.lic. Using the example file
name above, you would enter the following command:
cp 00:10:18:1C:BE:41_license.lic license.lic
12. List the files in the directory and verify that license.lic is present:
ll
13. Restart the PP blade services by entering the following command:
service idirect_hpb restart
Encryption is now enabled on the PP blade.

STEP 3. ENABLE THE LINK ENCRYPTION FEATURE ON THE NMS

SERVER
1. Using a terminal emulator (such as puTTY) create an SSH connection to the NMS Server
and log on as idirect.
2. Switch to root user by entering the following command:
su -
3. Enter the root password at the prompt.
4. Connect to the NMS configuration database with mysql by entering the following
command:
mysql nms;
5. At the mysql prompt, enter the following command:
select * from ServerConfiguration;

22 iDX 3.0 iDirect Features and Chassis Licensing Guide

6. To determine if encryption is allowed, scroll down until you find the row
encryption_allowed in the ServerConfiguration table. For example:
| ENCRYPTION | encryption_allowed | 0
In the above example, the last column contains a zero (0) indicating that encryption is
not allowed, so you must continue with Step 7. If the last column contains a one (1)
encryption is allowed, and you can exit mysql (Step 9) and discontinue this procedure.
7. Change the encryption_allowed value from 0 to 1 by entering the following command:
update ServerConfiguration set Value="1" where
Field="encryption_allowed";
You should see the following output:
Query OK, 1 row affected (0.00 sec)
Rows matched: 1 Changed: 1 Warnings: 0
8. Confirm that this change was successful by entering the following command:
select * from ServerConfiguration;
You should see the following output, confirming that you have successfully changed the
value to 1.
| ENCRYPTION | encryption_allowed | 1
9. Exit mysql be entering the following command:
exit
10. Restart the nmssvr service by entering the following command:
service idirect_nms restart nmssvr
The following output displays.
Stopping nmssvr:[ OK ]
Testing database integrity.
Start update for QoS rules.
