iDirect offers several different types of licenses, depending on your iDX release, the features
you want to use on your networks, and your specific hardware.
Each license type is described in detail in the following sections.
NMS Server License — Introduced in iDS 7.0, an NMS license is required to operate the iDirect
NMS server. This license is obtained from the iDirect Technical Assistance Center (TAC) and
installed on your NMS server when you initially install or upgrade the iDirect software.
Included in the NMS license are specific features you may request, including:
• Geographic Map
• Global NMS
• SkyMonitor
• VNO User Groups
• CNO User Groups
Instructions for installing the NMS Server license are provided in the Network Upgrade
Procedure Guide for the specific release you are installing, which can be downloaded from
the TAC Web Page at http://tac.idirect.net).
Hub Timing Group License — Beginning in iDX Release 2.0, Hub Timing Group licenses are
required to enable chassis slots on both the 4-slot and 20-slot hub chassis. For new 5IF hub
owners, this method offers a way to “pay as you grow” such that you can activate one, some,
or all five timing groups as your networks grow. These licenses are obtained from the TAC,
based on specific information you provide, and are imported using the iBuilder License
Toolbar.
Note: Refer to Chapter 2, Acquiring and Applying iDirect Chassis Licenses for
information about obtaining, installing, and activating Hub Timing Group
licenses.
Hardware-Specific Feature License — Introduced in iDX Release 2.0, Hardware-Specific
Feature licenses are software feature licenses available for specific remote modems or hub
line cards. These licenses include:
• Evolution X3 AES Link Encryption
• Evolution X5 AES Link Encryption
• Evolution eP100 AES Link Encryption
• Evolution X5 Upstream Spread Spectrum
Note: Refer to Chapter 4, Protocol Processor Blade Feature Licensing for information
about obtaining, installing, and activating Protocol Processor Blade Feature
licenses.
SatManage License — Functionality within SatManage is enabled by the use of license keys. A
SatManage Core license is required for all SatManage installations. Licenses for other
SatManage packages are optional. When you order SatManage modules from iDirect, you will
be asked to include the following licensing information:
• Eth0 MAC address of your SatManage server(s)
• Serial number of your SatManage server(s)
• Duration of the license you are requesting
• Number of circuits you want to license in blocks of 250 for the packages indicated
below.
Note: If you have SatManage Enterprise Edition without the NOC Toolset enabled and
would like to purchase a license to enable that module, please include the
virtual MAC address as well. The following command issued at the Linux
command line will produce this information:
grep "ethernet0.generatedAddress" /opt/Intra/machines/SE-RACSE-RAC.vmx
| grep -v Offset
Licenses are available for the following SatManage packages:
• SatManage Core (Required. Indicate the number of circuits you want to license.)
• NOC Toolset
• Customer Management
• Mobility
Now that you have reviewed the introduction to iDirect licensing in Chapter 1, What Is iDirect
Licensing?, you are ready to learn how to acquire a license and how to apply it to your iDirect
network.
Note: The terms “Chassis License” and “Hub Timing Group License” are used
synonymously in this guide.
Introduced in iDX Release 2.0, Hub Timing Group licenses are required to enable chassis slots
on both the 4-slot and 20-slot hub chassis. For new 5IF hub owners, this method offers a way
to “pay as you grow” such that you can activate one, some, or all five timing groups as your
networks grow. These licenses are obtained from the TAC, based on specific information you
provide, and are imported using the iBuilder License Toolbar.
Note: All users who are installing or upgrading to iDX Release 2.0 or later are
required to obtain a Hub Timing Group license. Otherwise, the chassis will be
disabled following the upgrade.
Hub Timing Group licenses are required for 4-slot chassis, 20-slot chassis and daisy-chained
chassis. These licenses are controlled by a service in the NMS called the Chassis Manager
(cmsvr).
Note: Hub Timing Group licenses are not required for private hubs or mini-hubs.
Anyone who is installing or upgrading to a new iDX release is required to complete the
applicable Upgrade/Installation Survey (available at http://tac.idirect.net) and to provide
specific information about each chassis in order to generate the licenses.
• In a non-VNO environment, if the current chassis controller NMS is not the one to be
upgraded first, control of the chassis may be transferred to the first NMS Server.
• When multiple NMS servers are running this release and the Chassis is shared, all NMS
systems must have IP connectivity to the server that is running Chassis Manager.
• Each Hub line card must be assigned a Chassis slot. The Chassis Manager is the tool that is
used to assign slots on a Chassis. The Chassis Manager requires IP connectivity to
successfully perform this task.
• You may use ACLs, firewalls, or other security measures to allow shared access to the
Chassis Manager from multiple NMS servers, while at the same time preventing these NMS
servers from accessing each other.
Note: These conditions apply in all implementations for iDX Release 2.0 and later,
not just those with “Pay-As-You-Grow” 5-IF chassis and/or VNOs.
• To communicate with the Chassis Manager, use TCP port 15261 for inter-process
communication and port 15262 for console sessions.
Note: For more information about using the Chassis Manager in multi-NMS
configurations, refer to the iBuilder User’s Guide section titled “Sharing a 20-
Slot Chassis in a Multi-NMS System.”
Note: For information about changing the chassis IP address, refer to the iBuilder
User’s Guide section titled “Changing a Chassis IP Address.”
When you submit your request, keep in mind that the Chassis license must be requested at
least 24 hours prior to when you need to use the license for an installation or upgrade, and
the projected installation or upgrade date must be included in the request. Once you supply
this information to iDirect and it is verified, you will receive your Hub Timing Group license
key file. The file is provided in tar.gz format. Once you receive the license file, you are ready
to continue to Step 2. Enable Download Permissions on Chassis Manager
Note: If you are purchasing a timing group upgrade for an existing chassis, you must
provide the serial number and model type at the time of ordering.
Note: Make sure you have completed Step 2. Enable Download Permissions on Chassis
Manager before you begin this step!
1. Select License Toolbar from the iBuilder View Menu (Figure 1) to view the License
Toolbar.
2. Click the Import button on the iBuilder License Toolbar to open the Please Select License
Type dialog box (Figure 3).

Your chassis is now successfully licensed and updated.
For information about changing the chassis IP address, refer to the iBuilder User’s Guide
section titled “Changing a Chassis IP Address.”
Software features such as Link Encryption, TRANSEC, and Spread Spectrum are available for
licensing on specific remotes and hub line cards. In this way, you pay for licensed features
only on the equipment on which the features are actually used, which provides a simple,
scalable upgrade path to new features.
Note: Both the Link Encryption and TRANSEC features also require a license to be
installed on the Protocol Processor blade. See Chapter 4, Protocol Processor
Blade Feature Licensing for instructions.
This method is implemented through iBuilder, which helps you to avoid costly site visits.
Note: If you are unable to access iDX Release 2.0 or later, you will need to create the
license request file manually. See Option B. Creating a License Request File
Manually on page 18.

the Licensed Feature.
As introduced in iDX Release 2.1, a Protocol Processor blade encryption license is required to
enable Link Encryption and TRANSEC on any PP blade that communicates with the licensed
remotes.
Note: See the iBuilder User Guide for details on configuring Link Encryption for your
remotes and/or TRANSEC for yours DVB-S2 networks.
