MELODY

Prepared by: Ms. Joan B. Santorcas

Have you sung and felt the different beat of music? Do you know where you can
stop a while or where you can proceed to the next line of music? Are you familiar
with the notes and rest in music?
Melody is a series of related tones expressing an idea. The tones chose for a
musical composition are delivered from a specific scale. The notes are arranged
to convey a musical thought and give a musical meaning.
“The true goal of music-its proper enterprise-is melody. All the parts of harmony
have, as their ultimate purpose, only beautiful melody. Therefore, the question of
which is the more significant, melody or harmony, is futile. Beyond doubt, the
means is subordinate to the end”. – Johann Philipp Kirnberger.

DISCUSSION

C MAJOR SCALE AND A MINOR SCALE

Composers use scales to organize their composition in writing melodies and
harmonies. Different scales have been used in other eras and cultures which often
sound strange to you. The most common scales in the Western music are the major
and minor scales. These two scales are composed of eight notes in an ascending
and descending manner.
Music based on major scales sound happy or joyful.

Music based on minor scales expresses sad, serious, or mysterious moods.

Every major scale has a relative minor scale, and every minor scale has a relative
major scale. They have the same key signature but different tonic or hometone.
