Measuring Time and Rate
Measuring Time and Rate
Objective:
In this lesson, you will learn to:
1. solve problems involving conversion of units of time.
Key Question:
Why is there a need to know how to measure
time?
The concept of time is very basic and is integral in the
discussion of other concepts such as speed. Currently,
there are two types of notation in stating time, the 12-
hr. notation(standard time) or the 24-hr. notation
(military or astronomical time). The standard time
makes use of a.m. and p.m. to distinguish between the
time from 12 midnight to 12 noon ( a.m. or ante
meridiem) and from 12noon to 12 midnight (p.m. or
post meridiem). Military time prevents this ambiguity by
using the 24-hour notation where the counting of the
time continues all the way to 24.
Choose the most reasonable unit for measuring each time interval.
1. a blink of the eye
2. time spent sleeping
3. a 100-meter dash
4. a 10-kilometre hike
5. basketball practice
6. a television commercial
Extension:
In everyday life, time intervals are usually measured in days,
hours, minutes, and seconds.
Measures of Time: Conversion
1 day= 24 hours (hr.) 1 minute= 60 seconds (sec.)
1 hour= 60 minutes (min.) 1 year = 365 days
1 decade = 10 years (yr.) 1 millennium = 1000 years
1 century= 100 years
Try it!
a. 8 hr. = ____min. b. 7,200 min. = _____days
c. 36 wk. = _____ hr.
Example 2.) Add 5 hr. 38 min. and 3 hr. 49 min. to find its sum.
Example 5.) An airplane bound for Beijing took off from the
Ninoy Aquino International Airport at 11:15 a.m. Its estimated
time of arrival in Beijing is at 1550 hrs. The distance from
Manila to Beijing is 2839 km.
a. What time (in standard time) is the plane supposed to
arrive in Beijing?
b. How long is the flight?
c. What is the plane’s average speed?
Try it!
1. A car left the house and travelled at an average speed of
60 kph. How many minutes will it take for the car to reach
the school which is 8 km away from the house?
2. Sebastian stood at the edge of the cliff and shouted
facing down. He heard the echo of his voice 4 seconds after
he shouted. Given that the speed of sound in air is
340m/sec., how deep is the cliff?
RATE
When two quantities of different units are compared and
expressed as a ratio, we refer to it as 'Rate'. For example, if we
say that a car travels at a speed of 100 miles per hour, then it
means in one hour it covers 100 miles. Here, miles and hours
are different units. This way of comparing two different units
expressed as a single ratio is termed as 'Rate’.
In math, a rate is a ratio that compares two different
quantities which have different units.
Examples:
❖ For example, if we say John types 50 words in a minute, then
his rate of typing is 50 words per minute.
Discussion:
The word "per" gives a clue that we are dealing with a rate.
The word "per" can be further replaced by the symbol "/" in
problems.
Let us consider an example of a car that is traveling at a
speed of 150 miles in 3 hours. This can be expressed as 150
miles divided by 3 hours which is equal to 150 miles/3 hours or
50 miles/hour.
