Basketball Basics

Basketball is a team sport played between two teams of five players on a rectangular court. The objective is to shoot a ball through a hoop mounted on each end of the court. It was invented in 1891 by James Naismith in Springfield College, USA. He wrote the original rules in under 500 words. • It is played by 2 teams of five players on a
rectangular court.
• The objective is to shoot a ball through a hoop
mounted to a backboard at each end of the

Ball handling
• Holding the ball correctly using your fingertips
not your palm
Passing
• This skill requires vision, touch and strength.
There are 3 basic kinds of pass:

a. Chest pass

b. Bounce pass

c. Overhead pass
Passing
a. Chest pass – a direct lateral throw from one
player to another with thumbs directly behind
the ball.

b. Bounce pass – throwing the ball by letting it
bounce on the floor before it reaches another
player.

c. Overhead pass – throwing the ball overhead in long
distance
Dribbling
• It is an important
attacking skill which is
done by tapping the
ball with your fingers
in just one hand.

• Hold head up high
while dribbling
• Look in different
directions for
passing
• Protect the ball
• “The more you
dribble the better
you dribble.”
Shooting
• It is one of the most important basic skills in
basketball.
• It gives the team the scoring point during a
game.
• Types of shots:
a. set shot d. hook shot
b. layup shot e. slam dunk
c. jump shot
Shooting
a. Set shot – shot done with both feet on the
ground. (ie. free throw)
Shooting
b. Layup shot – shot done while the player moves
and throws the ball into the basket
Shooting
c. Jump shot – shot done by bending down and
jumping to shoot the ball
Shooting
d. Hook shot – shot usually done by big players
and center positions. It is done by arching the far
hand upward while moving sideways to the
basket.

e. Slam dunk – shot done by a player who takes
the ball and throws it down to the basket with
great force.
