The History

The story of ‘Servis’ begins with a group of friends - young, energetic, fresh from college - who

established Service Industries more than 50 years ago..

These young men, named Ch. Nazar Muhammad (Late), Ch. Muhammad Hussain (Late) – both

from Gujrat district – and Ch. Muhammad Saeed (Late) from Gujranwala District, started business

in 1941 at a small scale in Lahore. At that time, they were only manufacturing handbags and some

other sports goods. Within years their business flourished remarkably and they were supplying

their products to every corner of India at the time of Partition.

In 1954, they installed a shoe manufacturing plant at industrial area Gulberg, Lahore. This started

production in the same year. The industry started manufacturing various types of shoes. Later

management shifted the factory from Lahore to Gujrat. Service Sales Corporation (Pvt.) Ltd. – the

Group’s marketing company – was established in 1959. Humility, fairness, and respect were the

values close to the heart of these founders and it were these values that led to phenomenal

success of the Group over the years.

Today, the production side of the company has flourished into Service Industries Limited (SIL)

which has world-class shoes, tyres, tubes, and rubber production facilities in Gujrat and Muridke.

SIL is also the leading exporter of footwear. Service Sales Corporation (Pvt.) Ltd. (SSC) is today

Pakistan’s leading footwear retailer which is also diversifying into other businesses.

A humble venture of friends has grown into a Group that makes a difference in lives of millions of

people every day today.

The Group
Servis Group is one of the most respected corporate citizens of the country and has a rich heritage

spanning over half a century.

Today the Group is Pakistan's largest footwear manufacturer and exporter with interests in

wholesale and retail sectors. With a growing portfolio of brands and a nationwide network that

touches millions of lives everyday, Servis is one of the foremost brands in the country.

Setup in 1958, the Group is the largest footwear manufacturer, retailer, and exporter operating in

the country and has overall sales of more than PKR 12 billion. It currently employs close to 9000

people in its following companies:

Planning

For every successful organization planning is a basic tool to achieve their set goals. We can say that

planning is essence for success. So being a successful organization our each matter is planned. If we

do not plan our objectives, there may be different types of problems occurs.

The plan duration may be short run or long run. Our plan duration include both short term and long

term. In short term of period we receive the order from our service sale industry LAHORE. Then we

plan what type of material is required i.e. imported or local and if the raw material is imported then

from which country it is to be imported and what are the ways for import. In this period of time (3

months) we finalize our product and send to our selling center LAHORE.

So we need at least 3 months before the delivery of order.

In long run (next five year) our plan is to extend our business globally. Though we do business

foreignly but it is in form of outlets (not give the ownership to foreign residence) and now our plan to

do business through franchising (give the license to run our business).

For maximizing the profit there is always risk involve. Because of today’s fastly changing fashion

trend demands also change quickly. When our marketing department LAHORE launch a new

product, there is also risk that whether our product capture their mind or not or whether it will

according to their satisfaction or not and what will their response positive or negative.

Many business organizations set alternatives. As if their plan flops what they will do to reduce the

degree of loss. But we do not set as such alternatives.

Organizing

Organizing basically means arranging and structuring the work among the employees in such a

manner as to achieve the organizational objectives successfully.

And organizational structure is basically the formal arrangement of jobs with in an organization. Our

organizational structure is traditionally i.e.

FACTORY MANAGER

DEPARTMENT MANAGER

EMPLOYEES

The production process is distributed among various employees and one manager can not control all

the employees. After deciding what job tasks will be done by whom, common work activities need to

be grouped back together so work is done in a coordinated and integrated way. So for every activity

different departments are made. Our organizational departmentalization depends on requirement of

each department. That is in quality department there are few employees than in production

department.

In our organization single chain of command exists. Chain of command is a line of authority from

general manager to employees which define “WHO REPORT TO WHOM”. The order of general

manager is followed by each and every person of organization like factory manager, department

manager and employees .

And employees report to department manager who report to factory manager who finally report to

general manager.

In our organization each employee is employed on job according to his abilities and requirements of

the job. In other word best person is employed. To make employees more efficient we gave them

training so they can fulfill our requirements easily.

We give the standardized jobs to our employees. Our policy for employee’s job is that give them job

according to their standard and also give them surety of long term job so that they do work with full

confidence and have no fear of dismissal.

There is centralization of decision making in our organization. It means all decisions are made by the

general manager.

Leading

After people hired and brought into the organization, manager must oversees and coordinate their

work so that organizational goals can be pursued and achieved .This is the leading function of the

management. Because this function involves an organization’s people, it is an important one because

it involves peoples means it can also be quit challenging. Managing people successfully involves

understanding of their behavior, attitude, personalities, motivations and so forth . In addition it

requires effective and efficient lines of communication.

The order of the general manager whether it is strict or lineant follow by every one including factory

manager, departmental head and finally by employees . In other word departmental head follow the

general manager order to lead the employees.

In our organization every departmental head has cooperative behavior with the employees. They try

to understand their problems and do their best for solving those problems. If the employees do not

do the work according to specification they find the reason of his such behavior and coordinating

solve this problem.

We motivate our employees by helding gatherings and also in form of incentives.

Incentives may be in form of bounces, free medical facility etc.

The work of each employee is clarify clearly so that they understand clearly what they can do for the

benefit of the organization and assign them duty according to their quality so they get specialized and

no mistake in producing goods according to standard.

The presence of manager is very important during working hours. Because if there is any problem

occur during the production process the manager can explain or solve the problem on the spot and

work will not remain pending. Due to this reason we fulfill our order in exact time.

During the production process the manager check whether the employees do work according to

requirements or whether or there is wastage of resources by the employees or not. Manager also

guide the employees how they get maximum production with minimum resources. The quality of

products is checked constantly by manager during production so there is no chance of below

standard product.

Controlling

Managers must establish goals and plans organize and structure work activities and develop

programs to motivate and lead people to put forth effort to accomplish those goals. Even when

managers have finished these tasks. Their job is not done. Quit the opposite manager must then

monitor activities to make sure they’re being doing as planned. This procedure is known as

controlling.

Every department manager daily check whether the employees do job according to their work or not.

The factory manager visit weekly to check departmental activities.

If the conflicts arise in employees then departmental manager control them. If he cannot control than

the dispute is resolve by the factory manager. and if factory manager also unable to resolve the

conflicts then the decision of general manager is final .

Though managers of various departments are cooperative with the employee yet the check and

balance is correct. Managers have full control over subordinates and as a result work is being done

more efficiently.

If employees do not do their work properly, then firstly behave with them politely and told them this is

the task and do this in this way. If again they are not doing their work correctly than deduction in

salary is made, if still they are not doing their duties then suspension letter is issued.

Suggestions

 Planning process is only done by top management; sub-ordinates views are not

included in this process.

 They do not set alternative plans.

 Their plans are not so stable as if they were, they could easily capture the foreign

market.

 They should follow modern organizational structure instead of tradional organizational

structure. So that they can maximize their profits.

 They should be skill focused instead of job focusing.

 Training should be given to employees so that they can improve their skills and give

their best which is beneficial for organization.

 Salary should be given commission based so that employee’s can work more efficiently.

 Their structure is not according to international level, although in Pakistan they are

doing good job and marinating a good reputation.

 The prices of the products should match the purchasing power of the general public.
