internet to market finished household linens?

What’s New

Activity 1.2

Marketing Defined

It is important that you should learn the definition of marketing. Marketing

refers to the activities a company used to promote the buying or selling of their
product or service. These activities include advertising, selling, and delivering
products to consumers or clients.
The importance of marketing a product or service helps a business become
successful. One of the reasons the economy grows is business. If you wanted to help
the economy of the country grow, you can try and engage in business. While you are
still young, you can try to create products like household linens to engage to
marketing. This will be your training ground to become a successful business person
in the near future.
So why do we like a product? Aside from the quality, we tend to consider the
outside appearance of a product. That is what we called the package of the product.
Have you been curious how do products are packaged?
Let us read the information below:
A. Varied ways in packaging the products.

Packaging the products

Products like household linens need to be packaged before selling.
Packaging them is important for the following reasons:

7
a. To protect from dirt, stains, scratches, and from being disfigured which can
affect the quality of the product.
b. To make for easy transport because products are in the containers.
c. To help identify the products because the package contains the label and
information about the product inside the package.
d. To have product sales appeal because an attractive, clean, neat and decent-
looking package can entice customers to look into the product which can be the
first step in buying the products. The best way to market a product in the market
place is through advertising or promotion. This is used to attract customers to
buy the products or services.
B. Promotion means telling the people about your product and service. Common
strategies in promoting linen products are print media, product display, and
internet marketing.
Things to remember in packaging a product:
1. It should protect the product.
2. It should be easy to dispose.
3. The package should contain all the information about the product.
4. It should be attractive and innovative.
5. It should be made of household-friendly materials.

What is It

A. How to compute: Cost, Sales and Profit, Ways of advertising the products using
technology and Monitoring and keeping records of production.

Computing Cost, Sales and Profit

Cost- refers to expenses incurred in the production and operation of the business.

Production expenses- include cost of materials: (both raw and finished)

packaging and other supplement that go into the production of the products.
Operational expenses- include labor, utilities (water, electricity, telephone etc.)
transportation, taxes rentals repair and maintenance, machines and building and
other miscellaneous expenses.

In determining the selling price, add the cost production and cost
operation. Then add to this the mark up price which represent your income.
Example 1: Product: Pillow case (1 piece)
Materials: Amount
1 yard tetoron fabric P 38.00
Sewing thread 10.00
Cost of labor 20.00

8
Utilities 28.00
Total Cost 96.00
Add profit ( 20% ) 19.20
Total selling price: 115.20 or 115.00
Example 2: Cost of production and cost operation is P30.00 for a table
napkin and mark up price is 50% of the cost, which is P15.00 add P30.00 and P
15.00 gives a selling price of P45.00.
To determine income for one month, deduct gross sales from total expenses.
Example 3: Gross sales for the month of March is P30, 500.00 for all
combined sales different household linens. Total expenses amounts to P18,
900.00. Deduct P18, 900 from P30, 500.00 the net income is P11, 600.

Advertising the Products Using Technology

Online advertising and online selling using the different websites such as
Olx.com, Facebook and Ayosdito.com are the most used technology today. Using
creative and attractive packages and actual video of the products and satisfy their
curiosity and interest.
Display, distributing flyers, posters and brochures direct to potential
consumers or indirectly to stall and stores are other ways of advertising product.
Monitoring and Keeping Record of Sales Production
To keep track of the status of the products, there is a need to make regular
inventory. Do the inventory on regular basis like monthly inventory or quarterly
(every three months, semi-annually or annually? The inventory gives a detailed
description on the household linens sold. It is important to keep the record of all
information or data on production and sale of different products. Those data can help
in determining whether the business is gaining or losing. It can also help determine
the items are saleable and are fast moving and what item is not.

What’s More
How are you coping with our lesson? I hope you are still focusing into the
lesson and very eager to do the activities in the module. Do you have a favorite
advertisement or commercial on television?
Write down your favorite advertisement or commercial. Why do you like the
advertisement/commercial? What made you like it? List down on your notebook the
five things that made you like the advertisement/commercial.
These lists are the things that will make you buy the product. It is a form of
varied/creative marketing of the company to make you like or even buy the product
or service sold.
