Quarter 1 - Module 2 Vectors
Learning Competencies
Scalars are quantities that do not need to be defined by a direction and are sufficiently describe
by magnitude. Distance, speed, time and energy are samples of scalar quantities.
Vectors, on the other hand, are qualities that are describe by magnitude and direction. When
you search a place in a map, the quantity that you are looking for is a vector; calculating the
place from your point of origin and the direction(s) that you are going to take results in
displacement, a vector quantity that deals with both distance (magnitude) and direction. Aside
from displacement other vector quantities are velocity, acceleration, and force.

2.) Arrow head – direction
3.) Length of the arrow – magnitude len

B. Addition of Vectors
Resultant – summation of two or more vectors.
A Example:
B 20 m E and 30 m E
R = 20 m E + 30 m E
R=A+B
2|Page
R = 50 m E
2.) When 2 vectors are in opposite direction.
Example:
A 10 m E and -15 m W
B R = 10 m E– (-15) m W Note: start in positive direction
R=5mW
R=A-B
3.) When 2 vectors are perpendicular to each other.
B B
R =√ A2 + B2 Exam
90 o
A ple:
A 10 m N
and 15 m2
R√ = 10
E 2
+ 15
R =√5
m 3
B = tan -1 [ B/A ]
= tan -1 [ 15/10 ]
? A
= 56.31o
Try this!
Example 1
1. Illustrate the given vector. Select how the angle will be oriented to represent the direction
of the vector
2. Draw the lines parallel to x- and y- axes to enclose the angle set. The result is a right
triangle with the vector as the hypotenuse.
y - component
x - component

3. From this graph, we can now estimate and determine the components.
a. x – component b. y - component
x- component y- component
4.33 m 2.5 m
Example 2
60o
a. x – component b. y - component
x- component y- component
2.5 m - 4.33 m
Since the vector is in the fourth quadrant, the y-component should be negative.

B. Multiple Choice
Direction: Choose the letter of the correct answer, write your answer on the blank.
___ 2. Consider two vectors both directed to the east and with the magnitude of 10m. What will
be the resultant vector when they are added?
___ 3. Two vectors are added. If they have the same magnitude but opposite direction – say,
north and south, describe the magnitude when the first is subtracted from the second.
___ 4. Two identical vectors are added. What happens to the direction of the vector sum?
a. Double b. same as the given vector c. zero d. opposite as the given factors
___ 5. A vector is directed towards north with a very large magnitude. Describe its x-
component.
