Grade 12 Gen Physics Module Week 2

This document contains learning materials for a General Physics 1 course, including: 1) An introduction to vectors and scalar quantities, with examples of each. Vectors have both magnitude and direction, while scalars only have magnitude. 2) Instructions on adding vectors, including when they are in the same direction, opposite directions, or perpendicular to each other. 3) A description of how to break a vector down into its x and y components using trigonometry and a right triangle. 4) Sample problems for students to practice adding vectors and finding vector components. A quiz is also provided to assess understanding of key vector concepts.

Quarter 1 - Module 2 Vectors

Learning Competencies

 differentiate vector and scalar quantities,

 perform additional of vector ; and
 rewrite a vector in a component form.

A. Vectors and Scalar Quantities

Scalars are quantities that do not need to be defined by a direction and are sufficiently describe
by magnitude. Distance, speed, time and energy are samples of scalar quantities.

Vectors, on the other hand, are qualities that are describe by magnitude and direction. When
you search a place in a map, the quantity that you are looking for is a vector; calculating the
place from your point of origin and the direction(s) that you are going to take results in
displacement, a vector quantity that deals with both distance (magnitude) and direction. Aside
from displacement other vector quantities are velocity, acceleration, and force.

2.) Arrow head – direction
3.) Length of the arrow – magnitude len

B. Addition of Vectors
 Resultant – summation of two or more vectors.

Condition on vector addition

1.) When vectors are in the same direction.

A Example:

B 20 m E and 30 m E
R = 20 m E + 30 m E
R=A+B
2|Page
R = 50 m E
2.) When 2 vectors are in opposite direction.
Example:
A 10 m E and -15 m W
B R = 10 m E– (-15) m W Note: start in positive direction
R=5mW
R=A-B
3.) When 2 vectors are perpendicular to each other.
B B
R =√ A2 + B2 Exam
90 o
A ple:
A 10 m N
and 15 m2
R√ = 10
E 2
+ 15
R =√5
m 3
B = tan -1 [ B/A ]

= tan -1 [ 15/10 ]
? A
= 56.31o

Try this!

Direction: Find the Resultant (R)

1.) 10 m N and 5 m South

2.) 5 m E and 13 m E
3.) 17 m E and 3 m W
4.) 12 m S and 14 m S
5.) 7 m N and 12 m E

C. Vector – Component Method

Find the x- and y- components of the following vector:

Example 1

d1 = 5m, 30o north of east

Solution

1. Illustrate the given vector. Select how the angle will be oriented to represent the direction
of the vector
2. Draw the lines parallel to x- and y- axes to enclose the angle set. The result is a right
triangle with the vector as the hypotenuse.

y - component

x - component

3|Page
3. From this graph, we can now estimate and determine the components.

a. x – component b. y - component

d1x = (d1) (cos  θ) d1x = (d1) (sin  θ)

(5 m) (cos  30o) =(5 m) (sin  30o)
=
= 4.33 m = 2.5 m

x- component y- component
4.33 m 2.5 m

Example 2

d1 = 5m, 60o south of east

60o

a. x – component b. y - component

d1x = (d1) (cos  θ) d1x = (d1) (sin  θ)

(5 m) (cos  60o) =(5 m) (sin  60o)
=
=2.5 m = 4.33 m

x- component y- component
2.5 m - 4.33 m
Since the vector is in the fourth quadrant, the y-component should be negative.

Try this!

d1 = 15m, 40o south of east
