Assignment Brief
You are employed as a Network Engineer by Nguyen Networking Limited, a high-tech networking solution
development company, which have branches in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Da Nang and Can Tho.
The company has been contracted to implement a networking project from a local educational institute. The
specification of the project is given below:
People: 200 students, 15 teachers, 12 marketing and administration staff, 5 higher managers including the
head of academics and the programme manager, 3 computer network administrators.
Building: 3 floors, all computers and printers are on the ground floor apart from the IT labs – one lab located
on the first floor and another located on the second floor
As a first task, the CEO of the company Mr. Nguyen has asked you to investigate and explain networking
principles, protocols and devices and submit a report.
Part 1
5. Discussion on operating principles of networking devices and server types and networking software.
7. Explore a range of server types and justify the selection of a server, considering a given scenario
regarding cost and performance optimization.
8. For the given specification, identify the topology protocol for the efficient utilization of a networking
system.
The CEO Mr. Nguyen is happy with your first report and now he has asked you to analyze the specification
from the institution, as given earlier.
You need to design and implement the networking project within a given timeframe:
3. Produce a test plan to evaluate this design for the requirements of bandwidth and cost constraints as per
user specifications.
4. Justify the security requirements and quality of services needed for selection of accessories.
2. Conduct verification with e.g. Ping, extended ping, trace route, telnet, SSH, etc.
3. Record the test results and analyze these against expected results.
4. Investigate what functionalities would allow the system to support device growth and the addition of
communication devices.

INTRODUCTION
P5) Provide a logical/physical design of the networked system with clear explanation and
addressing table.
P6) Evaluate the design to meet the requirements.
P7) Implement a networked system based on a prepared design.
P8) Document and analyze test results against expected results.
P5) Provide a logical/physical design of the networked system with clear explanation and addressing
table.
- The logical network can also be upgraded and can be used to connect two or more computers together.
Logical design of a network consists of virtual design while the physical design of a network describes the
hardware functions of the network. Logical designs determine the flow of data or communication
between two networks while physical design is a communication between two computers connected with
cables.
- For example, a physical design of a network can be upgraded to link two or three office buildings. The
expansion would require an upgrade using logical design layout of a network. This would make it easy for
information to be processed from any system in buildings at the same time.
- Physical layout of a network is based on a logical layout. For example, an organization that installs a wide
area network would be drawn as a single line diagram; this is a basic design of a physical layout. Thus, the
explanation it means that logical design of a network can be developed or expanded using physical design
while retaining its original characteristics.
2) Explain the user requirement for this design:
- People: 200 students, 15 teachers, 12 marketing and administration staff, 5 higher managers including
the head of academics and the program manager, 3 computer network administrators.
- Building: 3 floors, all computers and printers are on the ground floor apart from the IT labs – one lab
located on the first floor and another located on the second floor
- Explain:
Ground floor: contains 35 staff computers (include 3 admin computers) and 3 printers
First floor: contains 25 student lab computers
Second floor: contains another 25 student lap computers
- Switch2 is the ground floor which contains 35 staff computers and 3 printers
- Switch0 and Swicht1 are first floor and second floor which contain 50 student computers
4) Physical design of networked system:
Printers

(ground floor)
PC 1-25

Addressing table:
P6) Evaluate the design to meet the requirements:
1) Test plan:
Test What is being tested Expected outcome
Number
1 Check the DHCP address of Student PCs on first floor DHCP requested successfully
2 Check the DHCP address of Student PCs on second DHCP requested successfully
floor
3 Check the DNS server of the Student PCs DNS server should be 192.168.4.1
4 Check the DNS server of the Staff PCs DNS server should be 192.168.4.2
5 Ping PC_1 to PC_25 Pinged successfully
6 Ping PC_1 to PC_50 Pinged successfully
7 Ping PC_1 to Admin Pinged successfully
8 Ping Admin pc to Staff PC_35 Pinged successfully
9 Check physical connection All is green
10 Ping router LAN to router WAN (RIP router first) Success rate is 100% (5/5)
The networked system is divided clearly into three different floors: ground floor, first floor, and
second floor.
The design has met the requirements of the manager: enough 35 staff PCs (include 3 admin PCs),
50 student PCs, and 3 printers.
The server room is separated from the PCs room for simpler maintenance and improvement
The network layout has been effectively indicated with clearly explanations
P7) Implement a networked system based on a prepared design:
1) RIP router_WAN:
To RIP router_WAN for more connections with other routers, we use “configure terminal” mode and type
“router rip”. Then, enter the network you want to connect.
2) RIP router_LAN:
To RIP router_LAN for connections with router_WAN and other routers, we enter “configure terminal”
mode, then type “router rip” to RIP the router. Finally, enter the network you want to connect.
“192.168.1.3” is the IP address of the PC_25. You can ping to any PC if you know the IP address.
4) Ping PC_1 to PC_50:
To test the connection between two PCs in two different switches, I have pinged PC_1 and PC_50. First,
enter the Command Prompt in Desktop mode of the PC_1. Then, type “ping 192.168.6.3” to ping to
PC_50. The connection was successful with 0% loss.
5) Ping Admin PC to Staff PC:
To test the connection between Admin PC and Staff PC, first, enter the Command Prompt in Desktop
mode of the Admin PC. Then, type “ping 192.168.6.3” to ping to Staff PC. The connection was successful
with 0% loss.
6.1) LAN_router:
Explain:
First, create DHCP pool for ground floor by pressing “ip dhcp pool ground_floor”
Second, set the gateway by typing “default-router 192.168.7.1” and the DNS server by typing
“192.168.4.2”
Finally, exclude six addresses for admin PCs and printers by typing “ip dhcp excluded-address
192.168.7.1 192.168.7.6”
P8) Document and analyze test results against expected results:
The DHCP address has been assigned successfully from PC_1 to PC_25
3) The DHCP address of PC_50:
The DHCP address has been assigned successfully from PC_26 to PC_50
4) Ping router LAN to router WAN (RIP router first)
To connect two different routers (LAN_router and WAN_router), the “success rate is 100% (5/5)” means
that the connection is successful.
