Rizal's novel El Filibusterismo continues to inspire the Filipino people today in their fight for independence and justice. It addresses issues of national identity, the Catholic faith, government corruption, and discrimination that still impact Philippine society. While revolution may not have been the right path in Rizal's time due to lack of education, the youth remain the hope for the future if given a proper education that teaches truth over mere lessons. El Filibusterismo awakens Filipinos to stand up for what is right, just as Rizal did until his last breath.

MS. PRETTY LEIGN GIMENA SS5: THE LIFE AND WORKS OF RIZAL

ENGAGE
Reflection: How do you see Philippines’ reflection using the lens of a Social Scientist? Write your
observation inside the mirror.

I see Philippines is still a developing country. You may not see it in

the metropolitan areas like Metro Manila or Cebu or even places
like Baguio up in the mountains since those places have decent
infrastructure to say that people can live in comfort and progress.
But there are much much more places in the country where even
decent schools, hospitals and roads are still lacking and making a
lot of people’s lives difficult. These places are often where the most
corrupt officials govern. They think of their pockets first before the
people and then deny any wrongdoing when caught.
In an archipelagic country like the Philippines,
development is not easy as most of the smaller towns in small
islands would get the least priority especially if it doesn’t produce
anything significant that directly benefits the country.
KNOWLEDGE BUILDING
Assessment Task 1: PROBLEMS AFFECTING THE YOUTH

Analysis:

What were Rizal views on economics? In his two novels, he dramatized the
injustices of Spanish colonial rule through the characters of Sisa, the unfortunate
mother of two children brutalized by a Church deacon, was the very snapshot of
poverty. In the ‘’Fili’’ he made know his thinking on economic development through
the protagonist, Simoun, a well travelled and wealthy Filipino businessman. Does
poverty still exist today? Well as Philippines is still poor, poverty is taking a toll on
Filipinos, parents often can’t make enough money to support their families; children
then have to be taken out of school in harsh conditions. They are having a hard time
surviving in such difficult conditions and more and more are falling into extreme
poverty.

Problem 1:

POVERTY

Analysis:

Corruption in the government had its origins during the time of the ancient
Filipinos. These were worsen by the abuses of Spanish friars and officials with the
onset of the colonial rule. Jose Rizal, condemned and expose these abuses and
cruelties in his two novels the Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo. Today,
political intervention and nepotism in the government are very rampant. Many
incompetent officials land a career in government service — turning the
government system into an inefficient organization prone to corruption and
manipulation of politicians. Jose Rizal had known
this, and for him, the people are to be involved
in the task of good government. Problem 2:

CORRUPTION

Analysis:

Undoubtedly, the Filipino youth - the new Rizals - are the hope of the nation. It is their
hands that would inscribe the next chapters of the country’s history. The new Rizals
should surface among the Filipino youth of today. But according to figures from
Department of Education and the National Statistical Coordination Board in the
Philippines. 1 in 6 Filipino kids will not attend school. Further, only 7 out of 10 kids will
complete elementary school. Of those 7 kids, only 4 will complete high school, and of
those 4, 1 will proceed onto university. The main reason for this? Poverty.

Problem 3:

LACK OF EDUCATION
CRITICAL THINKING
Assessment Task 1: EL FILIBUSTERISMO AND THE CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY

CHARACTER SYMBOLISM CONTEMPORARY RELEVANCE

1. Simoun By the character of Simon, Rizal stressed the

important role of youth in challenging the
government as seen in the efforts of students like
Basilio and Isagani to organized themselves and
unite to call for reforms.

2. Basilio He represents the young educated Filipinos who are

apathetic to the need of the society.

3. Juli The girlfriend of Basilio, and the youngest daughter

of Kabesang Tales. To claim her father from the
bandits, she had to work as a maid under the
supervision of Hermana Penchang. Eventually, she
was freed from committed suicide after Father
Camorra attempted to rape her. Rizal expose how
rampant violence against woman that may cause
suicide during colonial period which is still present
until today.

4. Isagani He symbolizes the youth whose love for the country

is great to the point of being branded as idealistic.

5. Paulita Gomez The beautiful niece of Doña Victorina. She rejected

Isagani because of his liberal ideas. She represents
the women who have no sense of nationalism and
sympathy towards others.

6. Quiroga Through the character of Quiroga, Rizal warns of

the dangers brought to the country by crafty Chinese
businessmen. Rizal describes how they shower
those in power with extravagant gifts in order to
gain favor, and then raise the prices of the goods
they sell in order to get back the money spent on
such gifts.

7. Father Camorra The lustful parish priest of Tiani, San Diego’s

adjacent town who has longtime desires for young
women. He nearly raped Juli causing the latter to
commit suicide. Rizal was blowing the whistle on a
horrible practice in fictional terms, but he still used
painstakingly indirect language. The friars were after
all, among the most powerful on the day. Fiction or
not, we all know how that turned out for Rizal. It is
Rizal’s wa to stop thinking that protecting the
reputation of high-status men outweighs protecting
the vulnerable.
CREATING
Assessment Task 3: CRITICAL ANALYSIS: EL FILIBUSTERISMO

Critical Analysis: EL FILIBUSTERISMO

El Filibusterismo represents as an inspiration to the Filipino people. In terms of views on

national identity, the Catholic faith and its effects on the choice of Filipinos, and the issues of
government and corruption, violence and discrimination, it has a great impact on Philippine
society, and on a wider scale, the issues related to the effect of colonialism on the lives of citizens
and the cause of independence. The book awakened the Filipinos in the past and is still awakening
the Filipinos of today, to fight for what we believe is right. We may not be the victor always in
every battle but the most important is, we continue to fight until our very last breath, just like
Rizal.

Rizal did not approved the idea of revolution because for him it is still untimely. According
to him, the mind of the people was not fully educated of the concept of freedom - that proper
education should be first - education of truths, not school lessons - that should such militant
physical revolution take place ahead of mental evolution - the physical enemy or physical carriers
of the real enemy would merely gone, but people would still be slaves of untruths and corruption.
The Filipino youth has always been tagged as the ‘’hope of the nation’’. This is not new everyone.
Rizal emphasized that every Filipino, regardless of their status in life can be a living Rizal only if
they would integrate the blazing fire of leadership and love in their respective noble promise.

The youth will only be the fair hope of the motherland if we will give them the proper
education that they deserve, and the education that they need. According to our national hero,
education will be the solution to the problems of our country. Our youth will never be the fair
hope of our motherland if we will not teach them, if we will not mold them. Let’s treat our youth,
the way Jose Rizal is treated, he had his first lesson in their home and it is given by her mother. We
should keep in mind, that without us it is not possible for the youth to be the fair hope of the
motherland, and without education we will all be nothing.Let’s see to it that the first lesson that the
youth is going to learn will be learned at home. Let’s teach the youth, before the world and our
society teach them.
