Research

Students will begin researching topics for their informational reports by exploring topics using online research tools like Epic, Raz Kids, and Kiddle. The teacher will circulate to ensure students have chosen topics and are exploring their topics through various sources. Next class will focus on identifying subtopics and creating a table of contents. While the online tools provided some information, students felt limited and wanted to use Google as well to find more information, suggesting the plan should address safe ways to allow broader research sources.

topic? Is this exploration
changing their topic idea?

Stage 3: Learning Experience

Prior to  Resources  Laptops
Lesson: to Bring:
Time: Content/Description Notes/Assessments:
Introduction: Picking a Topic
 Remind students that they should have picked out a topic
7 mins for their reports
 Tell them that the research for their topics begins today to
start learning more about their topics. Even if they know
lots about their topics, there is more to learn. You need to
become the expert on the topic.
 Could be entire books, or chapters of the book. Or a great
website- today is just about becoming familiar with the
topic. We will take notes in a few days, just enjoy
exploring your topic
 Show them Kiddle – tell them they can use that, Raz Kids
or Epic
Body: Research
 Students will spend the rest of class researching the topic
50 mins of their choice.
 I will go around and make sure everyone has chosen a
topic

Closure:
3 mins  Tell students that next class we will talk about subtopics &
table of contents
Stage 4: Reflection
1. Detailed description of the actual lesson as taught: includes students’ response to
instruction and any changes from the lesson plan:
 I told students that today will be their first chance to start exploring their topic- they
might find that when they look around at their topic they change their mind about what

to write about
 Students explored their topics for the rest of class on Raz Kids, Epic Books and Kiddle.
2. Specific strengths of the lesson plan and delivery:
 Students ended up doing the research in pairs because we didn’t have enough
computers- This actually worked out nicely because students could have a chance to
talk about their topic with their partners and get ideas for each other. I would do it this
way again.
3. Specific weaknesses in the lesson plan and delivery:
 Students were feeling like they wanted to find more information on Google because
Kiddle is definitely limited.

4. What must be addressed to improve this plan?

 Consider safe ways to allow the students to research through Google
 If the library was open this would be a good alternative for research as well
