MYP QUESTIONS

Q1 . Use Pythagoras’ Theorem to find the value of pronumerals in each of the following.

a) In the Pythagoras theorem Hypotenuse is Y cm, base is 4/2= 2 cm and height=3/2=1.5 cm hence as per the
Pythagoras theorem
A2 + B2 = C2
A = Base of right triangle
B = Height of right triangle
C = Hypotenuse of the triangle

After putting the values in the formula we get

A2 + B2 = C2
(2cm)2 + (1.5cm)2 = (Y)2
4cm2 + 2.25cm2 = 6.25cm2
hence Y2 = 6.25 cm2
Y = √6.25cm2
Y = 2.5 cm

b) In the given question Hypotenuse is a m , base = 15 m , and height=(13m – 5m) = 8 m

hence as per the Pythagoras theorem
A2 + B2 = C2
A = Base of right triangle
B = Height of right triangle
C = Hypotenuse of the triangle

After putting the values in the formula we get

A2 + B2 = C2
(15m)2 + (8m)2 = (a)2
225m2 + 64 m2 = 289 m2
hence a2 = 289 m2
a = √289 m2
a = 17 m

c) As per the Pythagoras theorem

A2 + B2 = C2
A = Base of right triangle
B = Height of right triangle
C = Hypotenuse of the triangle

i) In the given question Hypotenuse is a m , base = 15 m , and height = 8 m

After putting the values in the formula we get
A2 + B2 = C2
(15m)2 + (8m)2 = (a)2
225m2 + 64 m2 = 289 m2
hence a2 = 289 m2
a = √289 m2
a = 17 m

ii) In the given question Hypotenuse is b m, base = 6 m, and height = 8 m

After putting the values in the formula we get

A2 + B2 = C2
(6 m)2 + (8 m)2 = (b)2
36 m2 + 64 m2 = 100 m2
hence a2 = 100 m2
b = √100 m2
b = 10 m

Q 2. The longest side of a right-angled triangle is 17 cm. If one of the

other sides is 8 cm in length,find the length of the third side.

Ans: The longest side of the right angle triangle is Hypotenuse = 17 cm

       If one side of the triangle is = 8 cm
Then the third side of the triangle is will be given by the formula
(Hypotenuse) 2
= (one side)2 + (Other side)2
Solution:
Since we are given the right angled triangle So, we will use
Pythagorean theorem.
Q 3 A suitcase measures 24 inches long and 18 inches high. Find the diagonal
length of the suitcase to the nearest tenth of a foot

Ans: Assuming that the length and height of the suitcase form a right angle (90
degree angle), we can use the Pythagorean Theorem:
(length)2 + (height)2 = (Hypotenuse)2

Length = 24 Inches
Height = 18 Inches

The diagonal length is equal to the square root of the sum of the length squared
and the height squared.

Hence:

(24 inches)2 + (18 inches)2 = (Hypotenuse)2

576 inches2 + 324 inches2 = (Hypotenuse)2
900 inches2 = (Hypotenuse)2

Hypotenuse = √900 inches 2=30 inches

Q 4. A 5 metre ladder is positioned 3.2 metres from a building, as shown in the diagram. Will
the ladder reach a window which is 4 metres from the ground?

Ans: The ladder height =Hypotenuse = C= 5metre

The distance of ladder from the wall= base of right triangle= B= 3.2 metre

Height from the ground to which the ladder will reach= height of the triangle = A = X

On applying the Pythagoras theorem

(Base)2 + (height)2 = (Hypotenuse)2

we get

(3.2 metre)² + (X)² = (5 Metre)²

OR

10.24 metre2 + X² = 25 metre2

X² = 25 metre2 - 10.24 metre2

X² = 14.76 metre2

X = √14.76 metre2= 3.841 metre2

Thus the ladder can reach upto the height of 3.841 metre 2 only but not 4 meters

Q 5 A cone is shown. Find the diameter of the cone

Ans in the given cone the height of the cone is 8 cm

The slanting height (or the hypotenuse) is 10 cm

The diameter of the circle is twice the base of right triangle inside the cone

On applying the pythogoras theorem:

(Base)2 + (Height)2 = (Hypotenuse)2

we get
(X)² + (8 cm)² = (10 cm)²

OR

X² + 64 cm2 = 100 cm2

X² = 100 cm2 - 64 cm2

X² = 36 cm2

X = √36 cm2 = 6 cm

Thus the diameter of the circle is twice the base of right triangle inside the cone = 2X 6= 12 cm
