Card Games

Rummy is a card game where the objective is to form melds of 3 or more cards of the same suit or rank. Players are dealt 7 cards each and take turns drawing from a stock pile or other players' discards to form melds or lay off cards onto melds. The first player to discard all their cards by forming melds wins and scores points based on the cards left in other players' hands. Garbage is a variation where the objective is to arrange cards in sequence from ace to king by drawing and placing cards, with jacks and queens being discarded and kings being wild. Players are eliminated as they fail to complete the sequence in a round, and the first to arrange their cards in order wins

Rummy

History
Origin is unknown, though there are ideas of where it came from. One says it originated in Spain
as a game called Conquian, which spread to American countries in 19th century. Another
relates it to the Chinese game Mahjong with its pick and drop style of gameplay. The game saw
rising popularity during WWI due to its simplicity. The name Rummy is thought to have
originated from the British slang “Rum” for “odd or peculiar” which relates to the odd nature of
the game.

Deal
1. Each player gets 7 cards, dealt one at a time
2. Play begins left of the dealer.
Play
Procedure of a Turn
1. Draw one card from one of two places:
a. Discard: cards are face-up
b. Stock: cards are face-down
2. Meld
a. Run: 3 or more cards OF THE SAME SUIT in numerical order
b. Set: 3 or 4 cards OF THE SAME FACE
3. Lay off
a. You may add cards to another player’s meld during a turn.
b. Keep these cards in your area of play so you can keep track of your points
c. You MUST meld before you can lay off
4. Discard one card to the discard pile
5. Going out
a. Your objective is to discard all of your cards, or “Go Out”
b. You can only go out on a discard. As in, if you are laying off cards on another
player’s meld, you must save a card to discard and go out.
c. If you lay off all of your cards without discarding, you must draw one card from
the Stock.
i. In addition, on your next turn, you must draw again as per the rules.
Score
● Cards are awarded points at face value. A is low, J, Q, K are all 10.
● When a player goes out, all hands are tallied using these points. All points are awarded
to the winner of the game
○ This means only the winner scores points during a hand
● First player to 400-600(100 points per player) wins
○ You can also play x deals, so after “5” deals, whomever has the most points
wins.
● If you go all out in one turn (meaning your first meld/lay off) then your points that round
are doubled
Garbage
Objective:
The object of the game is to be the first player to line up your cards in a sequence starting
with the ace.

Deal:
To start, deal 10 cards to each player. The remaining deck is placed in the middle. The
cards remain face down. Setup your cards in a straight row.

Play:
The player left of the dealer goes first by drawing the top card from the middle deck. In
the first round each player has 10 card spots. The spots are numbered 1 to 10 starting
from the left. When a numbered card is drawn, the card is placed in the corresponding
spot. For example, a 5 drawn will be put face up in the fifth spot on your row. The face
down card in the 5 spot is flipped up and moved accordingly. When player can no longer
make a move, a discard takes place to end the turn.
The next player to the left can choose to take the top discard, or draw the top card of the
deck. The kings are wildcards and can be put in any spot. The jacks and queens are
garbage and are discarded when picked up. Aces are used for the 1 spot.

Score:
Once a player has flipped up all his/her cards, each other player gets 1 more turn. All the
players that were able to flip up all 10 cards will only be dealt 9 cards in the next round,
and will only need to get a sequence of 1 to 9.
Players that did not flip up all the cards will have to play the next round with 10 cards
again. Play continues this way with winning players going down 1 card, and losing players
replaying with the same amount of cards as the previous round. The first player to flip an
ace in his/her last round wins the game.

Extra Rules:
● When a player flips up all his/her cards the other players get one more turn. If on
that last turn a player is able to flip up all his/her cards, he/she will also go down
one card for the next round.
● Wildcards can move. For example, a player with a wildcard in the 2 spot that draws
a 2 can replace the wildcard with the 2. The wildcard can then be moved to a
different spot.
