Atomic Theory Notes

Atoms are the building blocks of matter. All atoms of the same element have the same number of protons but can have different numbers of neutrons, forming isotopes of that element. The atomic number identifies the element and equals the number of protons in the atom. The mass number is the total number of protons and neutrons. Atoms are electrically neutral overall, with the number of electrons equaling the number of protons.

Atomic Mass on the Periodic Table

Atomic Mass
Atomic mass is the weighted ________________________ mass of all the atomic masses of
the ________________________of that atom.

•Example of an Average Atomic Mass

Cl-35 is about 75.5 % and Cl-37 about 24.5% of natural chlorine.
35 x 75.5 = 26.4
